Robert Frost: Nothing Gold Can Stay

Autumn ATC: Brilliant Colors

When I think about Autumn, Robert Frost’s classic poem, Nothing Gold Can Stay, always comes to mind. I first discovered this poetic gem as a young girl when Ponyboy recited the poem to Johnny during a particularly poignant scene from S.E. Hinton’s award-winning novel, The Outsiders:

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

This poem has always resonated with me because it reminds me that life is transitory. It reminds me to delight in the joys that each moment brings because they are fleeting. It reminds me to appreciate what’s around me, to not take anything for granted, because nothing in this world lasts. The changes that Autumn brings reminds me of these things too, which is why I think of Frost’s poem during this season.

Now, these don’t sound like things to celebrate – after all, “Eden sank down to grief” from the weight of these revelations. But, I also find comfort in this poem because in it, I find a glimmer of hope. I see the promise of new green, and new gold, with the dawning of each new day. Life is cyclical. We don’t have to fear the changes that Autumn brings or drown in the depths of Winter when we remember that Spring is on the horizon.
