WOYWW 60: Gifts From A Poet

Hope Is A Blind Bard
Sister Maura Eichner

This week, I received some distressing news. As a result, I’m departing from my regularly scheduled WOYWW post to share a poem that a former teacher, friend, and mentor wrote. I am sharing it in both written form and on video – I was actually present at this reading! I hope you enjoy the poem, and I hope you’ll stop by my Photo Of The Week to see one of my first – and favorite – pictures of Legend.

What My Teachers Taught Me
I Try To Teach My Students
By Sister Maura Eichner
A bird in the hand
is not to be desired.
In writing, nothing
is too much trouble.
Culture is nourished, not
by fact, but by myth.
Continually think of those
who were truly great
who in their lives fought
for life, who wore
at their hearts, the fire’s
center. Feel the meanings
the words hide. Make routine
a stimulus. Remember
it can cease. Forge
hosannahs from doubt.
Hammer on doors with the heart.
All occasions invite God’s
mercies and all times
are his seasons.

====================

Make routine a stimulus. Remember it can cease.
Have a blessed week, dear friends!

Good Afternoon, thanks for sharing this and so sorry you have had distressing news – I'm sure you take comfort from the words of the poem. I, too, have a favourite poem that I go back to whenever I need it, so know how soothing these words can be. Elizabeth x #61

I also had the privelege of knowing this gentle nun in life and death. Listening to her recite her poems or reading "Hope is a Blind Bard" was a blessing in itself.

The picture of Sister Maura at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland reciting "What her students taught her" brings back memories of your college days. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane.
