Made With Homemade Pumpkin Babka

The Kitchen Play Challenge

Are you looking for a mouth-watering recipe to wow your holiday guests? Then prepare yourself for a fabulous treat: Pumpkin French Toast Casserole – which I’ve prepared for Kitchen Play’s November Menu Challenge!

Each month, Kitchen Play hosts a Progressive Party that features a multi-course menu and enticing prizes from generous sponsors. Food bloggers are then invited to re-create their favorite recipes from the menus and to blog about their experience. Creativity in interpreting the recipes is encouraged. If you are a food lover, you must check out their site!

Calphalon is sponsoring this month’s challenge and I could not be more excited! I believe that the results you achieve in your kitchen depend, in large part, on the quality of the tools you use, and I know from personal experience that Calphalon makes great products! I have used Calphalon non-stick cookware and bake ware in my kitchen for well over a decade and have always been pleased with the results. I used a number of Calphalon products, including my 9 x 14 Baking Pans, 3 Loaf Pans, Cookie Sheet, Everyday Pan, Rubber and Slotted Spatulas, and Pastry Brush, while creating this recipe!

Kitchen Play - Calphalon Challenge

The Creative Process

Kitchen Play featured six fabulous recipes on their November menu. Although they all looked tempting, I knew I wanted to make Karly’s Pumpkin French Toast Casserole from the moment I saw it! Prince Charming and I are huge French Toast lovers, and we felt this would make an outstanding Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year’s brunch entrée for our holiday guests!

The Magic Starts With Our Homemade Pumpkin Babka!

I created this recipe in two parts. First, to give this recipe a unique twist, I substituted the store-brought French bread used in the original recipe with our Homemade Pumpkin Babka Recipe. This enabled me to incorporate the wonderful flavors of pumpkin and pecans into the bread itself. I then transformed the Pumpkin Babka into Pumpkin French Toast Casserole, creating my own special Pumpkin Sauce along the way. The result is a decadently delicious dish that you and your guests will love. Enjoy!

Pumpkin French Toast Casserole

Pumpkin French Toast Casserole Ingredients

3 Loaves of Pumpkin Babka, Sliced ½ Inch Thick
1 1/2 Cups Brown Sugar, Packed
2 2/3 Cups Pumpkin Puree
6 Large Eggs, Room Temperature
3 Cups Heavy Cream
1 1/2 Teaspoon Nutmeg
1 1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla
3/4 Teaspoons Ground Ginger
1 ½ Teaspoons Cinnamon

Pumpkin French Toast Casserole Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

2. In a medium bowl, combine all of the Pumpkin Casserole ingredients except the Babka and stir together well.

3. Butter two 13 x 9 Calphalon baking pans. Place a layer of Pumpkin Babka in the bottom of each pan.

Ladle half of the Pumpkin Casserole Sauce over the Pumpkin Babka in the two pans. Add a second layer of Babka over the current layers and ladle on the remaining sauce.

C2 - Casserole Step 3 - Layers with Sauce - Updated

Wow, does that look rich and decadent and full of great pumpkin flavor! Of all the flavors of baked French Toast I’ve made, I never did pumpkin. One of the things I love about this type of dish is the ability to make it the night before, and then pop it in the oven in the morning. Have you ever tried that? This would be a great dish for a Christmas morning brunch, or an autumn breakfast, before your family heads out for a hike.

I found your site on Blogaholic’s Fall Blog hop and this recipe sounded intriguing. It looks very hard to convert to gluten free though. 🙁 Do you have anything yummy in the french toast line that’s gluten free for the holidays? I’m not into really complicated recipes as there are only two of us most of the time, but I could use some help. Thanks.
