2012 Reading Challenges

Written Word Button - Boy

Awhile back – perhaps last year, perhaps the year before, the exact date and time elude me – I decided I wanted to read more. When I was young, I always had my nose buried in a book. Somewhere along the way, however, I got out of the habit of reading and into the habit of letting other less deserving things take up my time. So, I made it a point to begin to incorporate reading into my daily life.

That turned out to be one of the best decisions I made in a long time. Not only did it re-ignite my passion for something I love, but it opened up a whole new world of possibilities as I began to connect with others who share a love of the written word.

This year, I’ve decided to push the envelope even further. I am committing to Reading the Printed Word and participating in Five Reading Challenges for 2012. I invite you to check them out and join me in any or all of these challenges!

Written Word - Books Only

The Read The Printed Word Pledge

I support the printed word in all its forms:
Newspapers, magazines, and of course books.
I think reading on computers or phones or whatever is fine,
But it cannot replace the experience of reading words printed on paper.
I pledge to continue reading the printed word in the digital era and beyond.

52 Books In 2012 Badge

The 2012 52 Books In 52 Weeks Challenge

The title of this challenge is self-explanatory – sign up and read 52 books in 52 weeks! You can join at any time and read any type/form of book except for children’s books (you are permitted to include these, with a few stipulations). Since this is my first year participating, I am sticking to the basics, but hostess Robin includes a wealth of sub-challenges you will want to check out as well!

Outdo Yourself Reading Challenge 2012

2012 The Outdo Yourself Reading Challenge

The purpose of this challenge – hosted by The Book Vixen –  is to read more than you did last year. There are various levels that you choose (but you can change them at any time!) I’m joining at the highest level – I’m On Fire, with a goal to read 16 or more books than I did last year – since that is what I need to do to complete the 52 Books In 52 Weeks Challenge!

2012 TBR Pile Reading Challenge

We all have books that we buy, or receive as gifts, that we place on our shelves, where they sit collecting dust, until the perfect moment arrives for us to read them. Well, Bonnie at Hands and Home, along with nine other hostesses, are challenging us to read as many of those books – 2011 or earlier releases – as we can in 2012! I’m signing up at the A Friendly Hug level (11-20 Books) but hope to read the A Sweet Kiss level (21 to 30 Books)!

2012 Self Published Reading Challenge

Self-Published Reading Challenge

Sarah at Workaday Reads is hosting two challenges I’m participating in. First, I am supporting self-published authors by joining the Self-Published Reading Challenge. I am entering at the Paragraph (10 Book) level.

2012 EBook Reading Challenge

2012 EBook Challenge

I am also joining the 2012 EBook Challenge that Sarah is hosting – primarily because many self-published authors only release in EBook format. Since I do not currently have a specialty reader, I am currently reading books I’ve purchased in PDF format for this challenge. I’m signing up at the Floppy Disk level (5 EBooks) with the possibility of moving up to the next category as the year unfolds.

Summary

As you can see, I have my work cut out for me in 2012. What about you?
