WOYWW – Fiskars Paper Trimmers

Fiskars Premium Cutline Trimmer Close-Up

This year, I’m thinking about writing several features on the various crafting products we use as we go about the business of creating. Some are fun – some are fancy – a few are rather frivolous. But, when it comes to tools we rely on – the workhorses in our craft rooms – one of the essentials any serious paper crafter must own is a good paper cutter.

I’ve tried various makes and models of cutters over the years, but at the end of the day, I’m a Fiskars girl at heart. My first Fiskars paper cutter was what I lovingly refer to as “basic grey” – I’m sure you know the model I’m talking about. For years, many of us used it so much, we stretched the plastic arms and our cuts began to waver a bit. Fortunately, Fiskars stands behind their products – they replaced mine when I reported the problem to them several years ago. That’s goes a long way in building brand loyalty with one’s customers!

2 Older Fiskars Paper Trimmers

I eventually traded my “basic grey” for the purple model you see here (who can resist purple?) – then, upgraded several years later when its successor, “classic blue” came out. A little sturdier and wider than “basic grey”, that was my go-to model for many years.

Last year, during a 50% off Michaels sale, I treated myself to Fiskar’s latest and greatest model – the Sure Cut Deluxe Craft Paper Trimmer (also called the Premium Cut Line Trimmer). It’s been sitting on my shelf for several months now, as I’ve been saving it for a rainy day, but since it doesn’t rain much where live, I decided to bring it out to play for my first project of the year.

Three Generations of Fiskars Paper Trimmers

Now that I’ve played with The Lord Of The Paper Trimmers – all I can say is, “Where have you been all of my paper-crafting life?” This Paper Trimmer rocks! As you can see from the photos, it is a generous 6.25 inches wide (I sat it on top of my original paper cutters to give you an idea of what this looks like) with commonly used measurements shown on the grill. It’s long enough to fit a full-sized 12×12 paper on it with room to spare (on the first photo, you can see how much room is left over when a piece of Basic Grey paper is placed on top of it). It has an easy-to-grasp mechanism for lifting the arm and a locking mechanism to hold it in place when it’s not in use. It’s lightweight and easily transportable too – everything you could want in a paper trimmer!

So – with that in mind – I completed my first altered project of the year. Stay tuned to see what I made – it turned out perfectly!

Paper trimmers have saved many a finger over time. Do you remember when all we had was the blade knife and ruler?? Makes my blood run cold just thinking about all those cuts and nicks. Looking forward to seeing updates on products you like using.

  3. Voodoo Vixen says:

Oh how brilliant as I am now in the market for a new trimmer as mine has started cutting at an angle and I battle to get a decent square from it!!

  4. Leanne says:

WOW, sooooo jealous…I would love love love to have a decent trimmer, however, there is only one craft shop over here in Dubai and to be honest, its rubbish… May have to treat myself when I go back to the UK!!

    Happy WOYWW!

My grey one is just great – perhaps I don’t use it as much as you, as I’ve never had any problems (except when I forget to buy replacement blades and it blunts…)

I usually try to keep a few replacement blades on hand but I am notorious for forgetting where I store them – so I frequently end up using dull blades until I can find their replacements! You would think that would not be an issue in the past having had multiple trimmers but it was. Now that I have this nice new shiny toy to play with, I should make a note to replace the blades in my older models (once I find them!) so i have back-ups on hand should I need them – or, should I have crafting guests in my home! 🙂

  6. Okienurse says:

I have relied on Fiskars for years also! I have the 3rd one and my daughter bought the 4th one but the 3rd is so much easier for me to transport to crops and classes I will probably just keep using it! Thanks for sharing and have a great week! Vickie #50

  7. Mary Anne says:

So helpful. I swear the perfect, non-wonky cutting paper trimmer has to be the Holy Grail of the crafting world. I have so many, none ideal. I may have to price these in the UK (or carry one back from the USA next trip home) but the question is, can I wait that long?

    🙂

I have a Woodware trimmer and love it! When i first started I used a craft knife and ruler and it took me ages to get used to a trimmer but I wouldn’t be without it now.

      Hi Sue
I am not familiar with Woodware at all – I will have to look that up out of curiousity! 🙂
Yes I still have a craft knife and ruler – Anna Griffin loves those – but any sharp and pointy object is a dangerous (to myself) object when placed in my hands! 🙂

  10. judie says:

Sadly, I don’t get on with paper trimmers … I’ve got three, all tried and tested and found wanting! I’m a guillotine girl, and love my Purple Cow … perhaps that is going to be your next subject for review 🙂 BTW, fab review and I look forward to reading the others you have lined up … I think newcomers to crafting might benefit from them. Have a great week. Elizabeth x #96

I have 2 of the smallest basic trimmers ( adopted from yard sale piles. Who in their right minds gets rid of these?) You have me thinking… I do have a 50% off Michael’s coupon….
Sadly, our Michael’s store is closing in a week.

I am SO sad that you are losing your local Michael’s store! Quick, get up there before the inventory is gone and get yourself something good! If they carry this paper trimmer, it’s a GREAT score at 50% off… you’ll be amazed at the difference it makes over the smaller ones (I am!)

  26. Sheena says:

I just ordered my first paper trimmer yesterday! I’ve been working for years with a ruler & knife, so I hope I can be a bit faster with my new trimmer. I don’t think the one I’ve ordered is a Fiskars one, but it came with different attachments and is a good size so hopefully it will be as good as I want it to be!

    Happy belated woyww!

Wow – I can’t believe you are just getting your 1st paper trimmer – you are going to think you died and went to heaven when you see the difference a good paper trimmer makes when compared to an exacto knife and a ruler! Have fun with it – let me know what you got and how you like it – I’m sure everyone else will want to know too! 🙂

  27. JoZarty says:

Interesting review of those cutters and handy information to know.
    Thanks from

  28. I had a small basic gray fiskars and just loved it. Others complained how theirs never cut straight. Then one day I stepped on mine and knew what they meant. Then I had a Dahle for long, long time… expensive German (?) made rotary cutter. It cut great but was a bit fiddly with the measurements. I wore it out. I love my Tonic guillotine but it isn’t built to go places. I have two (big and small) Cutterbee rotary cutters (meh), a new small basic gray (cuts crooked), and a newer Fiskars, which I think is the model before the one you have here. I remember folks going on and on about the Purple Cow. And doesn’t Martha have something out there now?

I joke I am going to steal the one from work–big heavy metal thing, ancient, could amputate arms….

It’s amazing the lengths we will go to just to cut a straight line on a piece of paper, isn’t it? Perhaps, next week, everyone should post a picture of THEIR paper-cutting implements on WOYWW! 🙂

I have a couple of the blue fiskars trimmers, and I still like them, they seem to go on and on when other trimmers have failed….
