Definitely opposites attract. We’ve watched this with our boys and seen how good it is that they do. We see how our daughters-in-law draw out our sons in ways they never would have tried if they had married someone like them. We’ve also seen how our sons can balance the concerns of the girls. The trick is to not get someone who is too opposite! We’ve always told our kids to look for someone with a similar back ground, education, family, world view and experience, and especially faith and goals to ease the transition to differing likes and dislikes and personality traits.

This is a fabulous response Sharon! I have often thought that one of the reasons opposites attract is that God wants people to bring balance into relationships. I also agree that you can’t be too opposite – you need a shared sense of interests and values as well to sustain a good relationship!
Have a fabulous week!
Hi Ramona! I’m earlier than usual this week 🙂 Hope you have a great weekend. We are expecting a big snowstorm with somewhere from 12-30+ inches 🙁 And I thought we were on the path to spring…go figure.

Thank you for the fun party, it looks like I am earlier than usual too 🙂
I can’t believe that it’s almost Valentine’s Day! It seems like just yesterday that the ball dropped. My husband and I are two peas in a pod. Not opposites. But I know many opposites attract scenarios! Thanks for the hop!
It is kind of funny that you picked this theme for this week as this is the same theme I used on my blog this week. Thank you for hosting this. I think opposites do attract – I know my husband and I have a lot in common but there are many ways that we are very opposite. I can’t give any secrets to a lasting relationship other than we never go to bed mad. Always try to see the other person’s side as well.

You are an artist and I am not, but I did love to try and create. I gave up sewing, and needle work and crafts but I like what others do. I can write and that is what I now do.

I’m not sure if opposites attract. i think I will go for you marry (or find love) in the person who resembles your ideal figure when you were growing up. My husband is so much like my dad in so many aspects that even my mom says they are from the same school, responsible, loving, protecting and supporting! ok…I can go on forever but I won’t lol…This is my first time joining your party! Thanks for hosting. I’m now following

Opposites do attract and then it could be magical or a lifetime of cat fighting… Love this topic.

Opposites can attract, but I really do think you have to view the world the same way to get along, and have it last:)

i have to agree the harmony is just a little different and not so much that you can’t stand each other. In someways SO and I are total opposites, and in others, we are pretty much the same.

I’ve seen relationships where both opposites attract and where like minds unite. I really think it depends more on the chemistry of the individuals involved once they meet, and how committed they are to each other and the relationship.

Valentine’s Day will be rather somber around here except for the kiddoes, of course. DH will be in Texas on Valentine’s Day. And the day after that is the day my father passed in 1979. But I still plan on hiding some Valentine’s goodies in my hubby’s suitcase!

If you get lonely, you know where to find me! 🙂
Hello,
In my younger years, I know that I was attracted to men who were completely opposite of me–maybe it was an unconscious way to try to help myself expand and grow. The man I married and have a lasting relationship with broke this pattern however because he’s so like me in a lot of ways. (although different in many ways too!) I guess the most important thing is that he and I have shared–not opposite–values. Thanks for your great topic and for hosting! Lori

I agree that no matter how many external differences we may have, underneath it all, we need a shared system of values if our relationship is to last.
So glad you could join us this weekend. Hope you have a fabulous weekend Lori!

Opposites- oh yes! My hub and I are so opposite and I am drawn to quiet reflective people but am very outgoing myself! There is wisdom in that…this is a blessing. Why would I want to be around clones. Annoying. Rejoicing in differences! Also I have a link up for Valentines Day…Let Me Count The Ways (WHy my Hubby is Awesome Link up). I have got to write my post! I have been overly ambitious this month but have a lot going on …Happy weekend. Enjoying snowfall this morning!

Opposites definitely attract – my hubby and I are total opposites…he’s a pessimist and I’m an optimist – I always say that he keeps me grounded while I keep him dreaming. 🙂

Do you believe that opposites attract? Yes! hubby is shy, I am not lol.
What qualities do you consider to be most important in a relationship? communication, open & wlling to new ideas & evolving.
What do you think is the secret to relationships that last? I wish I had the answer to that, in my 20’s I would hav said LOVE! lol, in my 40’s now and it’s not only that. It’s being respectful of each other, communicating, being honest & being there for your partner, probably a whole bunch more, but we are 22yrs strong and still work in progess lol

My husband and I have been married for 30 years. I think the most important qualities in a relationship are trustworthiness and a sense of humor. It also helps that both partners take personal responsibility for their own health.

How awesome that the two of you have been married for so long!
You obviously have a perspective that few can match!
Thanks for sharing with us – have a fabulous week!
I think in many ways opposites do attract, because men and women are just wired to be different and complement each other. That is God’s amazing design. But, my husband and I do have much in common– our religious beliefs, our political beliefs, child rearing, etc. I think there needs to be some common ground or there will be a lot of arguing over basics like worship, family, etc.
I think each person needs to give 100%, not 50%. Love is a choice, not a feeling, especially as relationships get passed the “honeymoon” stage. It definitely takes concerted effort! 🙂

Let’s see — do I think opposites attract? That’s a very good question! And, also a very rough one to answer if maturity, age, and self-cofidence aren’t factored in. And, are we considering friendships or intimate long-term relationships?
I would say that opposites attract if one is tired of the “same-old, same-old” and finds whatever is opposite in the other refreshing (that would be dating LOL). Obviously, it will last only as long as the “refreshing part” remains.
On the flip side, if we’re talking about long-term relationships, such as marriage, we would need to consider at least one other category. Respect. If one is so opposite one loses respect for the other (i.e., neat/slob; educated/uninvolved; ambitious/content or lazy) then it seems it would be very hard to overlook just “opposite,” to what one would consider “normal,” and find any satisfaction in the relationship. One could end up being considered or labeled a “jerk” — the other “cold and humorless.”
So, my conclusion? If enjoying one’s company for a day, a week, or month – I’d say “Yes,opposites do attract and can enjoy a very eye-opening and exciting existence, especially if there’s a need to escape the “hum drum” of complacency. However, if knowing that a little goes a long way — love ’em and leave ’em — and an awareness there’s an escape of the entertaining “insanity,” I wouldn’t put my life-savings into that relationship. (We’ll sing in the sunshine, we’ll laugh every day .. we’ll sing in the sunshine, then I’ll be on my way).
But all is not lost, I do think opposites can survive, and very happily. But, only if at least one of the following has been, and is, been nurtured. 1) a non-threatening mutual respect for the strengths and weaknesses of the other. If both admire the strength in the other and can see it helping them in places they could be weaker, then it’s a win/win for both because each “balances” out the other very nicely, and both continue to grow through the relationship. 2) Truthful, loving communication and a willingness to change (or at least listen and consider) areas that “grate” on the other’s nerves. If one is of the opinion “well, that’s the way I am – take it or leave it;” or develops a combative, stubborn or defensive attitude, then only God can overcome the frustration one develops in a sort of “puberty” (when are you going to grow up) judgment of the other. That’s especially true if there’s a definite appreciation of the chance everyone has to grow and learn and mature.
If I were going to give any advice to anyone thinking of getting into a long-term relationship (i.e., married), it would be — If there is one thing that grates on you (even a little) and/or you would honestly change about the other person if you could because it drives you a little nuts, then it would be very wise to consider what the future would look like with them. Chances are that little “irritation” now, will start to develop into “deteriation” later; and no amount puppy love, lust or awe, will be worth the “aggrevation” for the rest your life.
God’s blessings to you and those you love, Marilyn
