One Thousand Gifts – Book Review

Envision this scenario:

You are four years old. Through the side window of your home, you see your parents hold the crumpled body of your younger sister in their arms, even as your mother cradles her three-week old daughter against her breast. No matter how many years pass, you cannot erase the image of your sister’s small, frail body crushed beneath the load of a delivery truck – nor can you drown out your mother’s screams, or the sobbing of the truck driver who did not see her as she toddled after a cat, or the look in your father’s eyes.

If this were your story – what would your life be like?

If this were your sister, your family, your beginnings – would you ever overcome your past?

Here is what Ann says about her loss:

From my own beginning, my sister’s death tears a hole in the canvas of the world.

Losses do that. One life-loss can infect the whole of a life. Like a rash that wars through our days, our sight becomes peppered with black voids. Now, everywhere we look, we only see all that isn’t: holes, lack, deficiency.

I”m sure a lot of us can relate to that!

Fortunately, Ann’s story does not end there.

One Thousand Gifts – A Dare To Live Fully Right Where You Are by Ann Voskamp tells the inspiring story of Ann’s journey through grief – and through life. In her best-selling book, Ann shares how she moved from a life filled with anger and bitterness to a life filled with overwhelming gratitude and joy.

How does one move from a place of emptiness to a place of abundance? How does one transform their life?

For Ann, it all began with a dare.

It was a dare, like a love dare of sorts, and I take it one clear November morning, not at all unlike that long ago November morning that her blood soaked the ground and I can never forget. It is the beginning of list season. Lists of holiday menus, lists of handmade projects, list of have-to-buys. They’re scattered and stacked across the counter, around my desk, when a friend’s dashed-off digital line blinks up on my screen. She dares me, and I don’t even blink. Could I write a list of a thousand things I love? I read her line again. As in, begin another list? To name one thousand blessings – one thousand gifts – is that what she means?

Are you ready to live with more intentionality than you ever dreamed possible?

Are you ready to accept the challenge to count your blessings and thank God for all of the gifts he has given you?

Do you dare?

Reading One Thousand Gifts is one of the best presents you can give yourself – or someone you love! Ann’s book is filled with poetic prose and insights that speak to the heart and make one’s spirit soar.

Georgia, I was stunned when I started reading this book – both by the circumstances that she was writing about and the poetically eloquence of her writing. Her writing, to me is breathtaking, beautiful, and haunting. One Thousand Gifts is truly an amazing book. Best of luck to you – you will want to read this either way! 🙂

Thanks for the chance to win. I think treasuring the gifts we’ve been given everyday is something I strive to do personally which started me blogging in the first place, to focus on my small victories. I deal with a chronic illness and have suffered the loss of a child. They both come to haunt me at times and it helps to read how others have dealt with the heartbreak and difficult times.
