Cooking With Flowers – Book Review
I love flowers.
I love growing flowers. I love decorating with flowers. I love wearing flowers in my hair.
But, I confess, the concept of cooking with flowers is new to me!
So, when Quirk Books invited me to review Cooking With Flowers – Sweet and Savory Recipes with Rose Petals, Lilacs, Lavender, and Other Edible Flowers by Miche Bacher of Mali B. Sweets, I could hardly wait to get my hands on it!
When the book arrived, I poured over it. I did not want to put it down!
My first impression?
I truly believe this might be the most beautiful cookbook I have ever seen!
Seriously.
Even if you never make a single recipe out of it, if you love cookbooks, you will want this book for Miana Jun’s gorgeous photography alone!
But – when you finish looking at the eye candy and actually start to read the book – I’m sure you’ll be fascinated by what you find!
The book opens by answering a few questions that are probably burning a hole in your brain:
- Why eat flowers?
- What do flowers taste like?
- Are flowers good for you?
Next, Miche reviews the rules that govern flower eating. (Seriously? Who knew!)
Then, we delve into the heart of the book, where Miche discusses over 17 categories of flowers – including Lilacs, Orchids and Roses – and treats us to over 100 floral recipes we can eat!
Here’s a sampler of what you will find:
- Imagine how refreshing Hibiscus Popsicles, Lilac Sorbet or Lavender Lemonade would taste on a hot summer day.
- Envision how pretty and colorful Spring Tulip and Pea Shoot Salad, Pansy Petal Pancakes and Passionfruit Orchid Tartlets would be!
- Picture the delight in your guests’ eyes when you serve Dandelion Ham and Egg Cups, Calendula Cornbread, and Violet Flower Cupcakes!
Are you starting to get the sense that you really need this book?
Miche includes a wealth of information pertaining to flowers in this book for your culinary inspiration, but she doesn’t stop there. In the book of the book, she also includes a section entitled The Basics: Simple Recipes for Stocking Up. There, you’ll find her “tried and true recipes” that work for most edible flowers – as well as a list of sources to get you started!
As you might have gathered, I am totally enamored by Quirk Book’s latest cookbook. Cooking With Flowers has inspired me to step outside of my comfort zone and to anticipate trying some new creations this summer. The fact that these recipes look like miniature works of art is a beautiful bonus!

I saw this book at the Quirk booth at BEA and wondered if it was any good. Glad to see that you’re so enthusiastic about it! I don’t grow any flowers, but I’m sure I could find a way to get the ingredients…

How lucky you are to have attended BEA live! Eric (the Quirk publicist) was manning the BEA booth. Wonder if you met him?!
I have really loved all of the cookbooks I have reviewed from Quirk but this one is truly gorgeous!
There is a source listing at the back of the book for places to get ingredients.
I also have a few Martha Stewart cookbooks that I believe also list sources (I think she uses flowers decoratively in some of her recipes).
I don’t think I am really interested in “eating” flowers per se. I just really love beautiful creations so the recipes she presents in this book – along with the gorgeous photographs – really appeals to my aesthetic sensibilities!
(Does that make sense?)
Love this cool idea for a cookbook! Off to add it to my Amazon wish list!

I often use flowers as a garnish or in salads. They are so pretty and some even taste good too!

I am unsure about cooking with flowers but I have so many recipe books just because the pictures are pretty so this might be a winner for me 🙂
