Pray The Scriptures – Book Review
As a young girl, I leaned to pray – as many of us do – by memorizing and reciting the prayers of my faith. As my faith has grown and my knowledge of God has deepened, however, so has my desire to have a more intimate relationship with Him. One of the most challenging parts of my spiritual journey over the years has been cultivating a rich prayer life. One key that has helped me tremendously in this area is learning how to pray from Scripture.
If you are unfamiliar with this concept, Pray The Scriptures – A 40-Day Prayer Experience by Kevin Johnson can help get you started! Think of this book as a combination devotional, prayer workbook, journal and discussion guide!
Pray The Scriptures opens with a brief introduction that describes what it means to pray from scripture. The focus of the book is the 40 daily readings, which are structured as follows:
- The Daily Devotional
- The Daily Scripture Passage
- Writing, Journaling, and Prayer Prompts
- Reflect + Pray + Discuss Questions
The Daily Scripture Passages are taken from various Bible translations. The devotional topics cover various aspects of the Christian faith.
I love the concept and structure of Pray The Scriptures because the book encourages us to interact with Scripture and God in a way many of us are not accustomed to. I think this is especially important for those who are new to the faith or trying to deepen their prayer life. I appreciate the book’s flexible format. While most people will use this book for personal devotions, you could just as easily use it for small prayer or study groups.
I think this would make a good devotional for new Christians who want to deepen their prayer lives as well.
