Happy WOYWW, dear friends! Today I had planned to share this sweet little birthday card and a photo of my desk. But, due to some late-breaking news that I’m about to share, let me suffice it to say that the Art Challenges are at the bottom of the post, and you’ll find Legend and a Maine Coon story over at Wordless Wednesday.
Now, onto the real story of the night…
Fire
About 30 minutes ago or so, I was sitting at my computer – which, if you recall, faces a window – identifying this week’s Art Challenges. (Had planned on writing my post early, but it ended up being late due to intermittent computer challenges all day!) All of a sudden, I hear sirens and see lights and one fire truck after another – about six in all – go whizzing through my complex. Then, I look out and see that there are also firetrucks on the street next to mine, lights flashing, blocking off traffic.
Scary, right?
So, I am home alone, wondering if I or my neighbors or are on fire, wondering if I am going to have to try to round up cats – cats that I can’t even find under normal circumstances half the time – and decide to go out to explore to find out what is going on.
For a brief moment I consider grabbing my camera but decide against it. I’m not worried about taking pictures. I’m worried about everyone’s safety.
So I hurry downstairs to the basement. On the way down, I notice that the cats have been terrorized by all of the noise because there are loose nails all over the steps and stuff that was formerly on a shelf strewn all over the basement floor.
Of course, there is no sign of the cats.
I walk down my driveway, where the fire trucks are, and as far as the eye can see, there are fire trucks lined up. There are police officers blocking the entrance to my community. I decide to walk over to ask them what is happening and to find out if I am safe where I live,
The police officer tells me that there has been a small fire several units down. He says they have it contained and encourages me to go back inside. Now, I’m not the kind of person to stand around and gawk at disasters, but at the same time, I want to make sure I’m really safe before I head back in, so I decide to explore on my own.
This is the first time I have seen my city’s rescue workers in action, and I have to tell you, they did an impressive job. Everything – thankfully – seems under control. I smell some smoke but I don’t see fire. I talk to my neighbors – we compare notes – and then I return home. Tsunami is in the basement awaiting my return. He accompanies me back to my office, where he jumps in the window for sentry duty. I pause to catch my breath.

Thanks Debbie! “Oh what a night!”
That would be truly scary. We have had a few scares over the years, like when teenagers set our trash cans on fire and one time when our humans returned home to find a fire truck parked in front of our house. The neighbors had a smallish floor fire. Glad efurrybuddy is okay and Legend and Tsunami did not need to be hunted down for evacuation. Well let me tell you that would have put a halt to everything. far me as well. You were fortunate it did not reach you. Fire terrorizes all, especially pets.

Yes, it was a frightening night. Now that I have had to process it, I have to reiterate how impressed I was by seeing our fire and police force in action, up close. They were SO calm and in control of the situation and they responded so fast. What could have been tragic was averted because of them!
Thanks for playing at MIM!
A lovely card idea – and I hope the fire didn’t do too much damage 🙂
