Death On Lindisfarne – Book Review
Lately I’ve been reading a lot of books that are a part of a series. Many of these series I am delving into mid-way, after the author has laid the groundwork for the current story in a previous book.
When an author is skilled at her craft, she is able to draw you into the story in a way that enables you to enjoy the book in hand while fostering a desire within you to go back and read the prequel, not because you feel that the story is incomplete without it – but because the story was that good.
Welcome, Fay Sampson, to that club!
British writer Fay Sampson is the author of Death On Lindisfarne – the second book in The Aidan Mysteries Series. The backdrop for the story is the Holy Island of Lindisfarne – a real island set off of the Northeast Coast of England. The island is steeped in religious history, making it the perfect place for people like widower Aidan and his 8-year-old daughter Melangell to come to study the saints and the roots of Celtic Christianity.
The island is also cut off twice a day from the mainland due to the ebb and flow of the tides – making it a chilling place to be trapped when the body of one of the guests on the island is found dead on the beach.
How will the people who have come to the island to find hope and healing react now that each of them is considered a murder suspect? Is the actual murderer still in their midst?
Fay has created a compelling story that is rich in church and historical detail and full of contrast and juxtaposition. The list of historical characters, maps, and group questions enhanced my reading pleasure.
You don’t need to read The Hunted Hare – the first book in The Adian Mysteries Series – to enjoy Death On Lindisfarne. Chances are you’ll want to, however, when you finish this story!
