Under The Rainbow – Book Review

Have you ever read a book that is painfully heartwrenching – yet remains full of hope? A book where the author is forced to grapple with the most difficult questions one can ask – questions for which there are no satisfying answers? A book that is highly personal in nature – yet those going through similar circumstances will surely relate to?

Under The Rainbow – A Mother’s Experiences Of The Promises Of God by Catherine Campbell is one such book.

Under The Rainbow is the story of Catherine’s journey through heartbreak and loss as she discovers that not one – but two of her three children are born with micocephaly – a disability that means they would never lead normal lives – a disability that ultimately leads to their premature deaths.

Nothing prepares you for that kind of anger, grief and loss. Not being a nurse – not being a pastor’s wife – not being a Christian.

But – having a relationship with God gives you a place to take that anger, grief, and loss – and as Catherine struggles to understand why this is happening to her and her family – she keeps the lines of communication open with God, even if her cries are cries of despair.

Catherine writes:

One thing I did learn over those years was not to neglect the Bible, because this is how God communicates with us. Closing the Bible is like refusing to let God speak.

Opening the Bible might not change your circumstance – but it sure can change your perspective!

Jeff Lucas says:

If you buy just one book this year, choose this one.

If you are a parent who is struggling with loss – who is questioning why your child was born less than perfect – who needs the perspective of someone who has walked down the difficult path of raising a disabled child or losing a child– then Jeff is right.

Under The Rainbow is written for you!

  1. This looks like a great book. Thanks for the recommendation. I love the way Catherine has testified to the Bible helping her get through her pain. I have been through hard times, though of a very different nature to what has been described here and have found the Word of God to be great strength to me.
Thanks for sharing at Essential Fridays.

  2. Thank you so much for agreeing to read my book Under the Rainbow, but especially for your very positive review. I’m so glad that you focused on the hope threaded through my writing. I’m less interested in people reading about me than in people recognizing God as the ‘Promise-Keeper’ and ‘Hope-Bringer’, whatever their life circumstances happen to be. Bless you for your part in making that a reality by your reviews.
