The A – Z Of C.S. Lewis – Book Review
Imagine what it would be like to read an encyclopedia devoted entirely to one of the most influential authors of the 20th century. What types of entries would such a volume contain? What fascinating facts would you learn about the person within? Would such a book hold the interest of the average reader or would its primary value be to those doing research on the individual the book was about?
Perhaps I can’t speak for the average reader, but if you are a fan of C.S. Lewis, if you enjoy reading reference books, or if you love learning little known facts and trivia about prominent people, then The A – Z Of C.S. Lewis by Colin Duriez deserves a spot on your bookshelf!
The A – Z Of C.S. Lewis is aptly subtitled “an encyclopedia of his life, thought, and writings”. This book contains alphabetical entries and cross-references on anything and everything you’ve ever wanted to know about C.S. Lewis’s life if only you’d known to ask!
Most people are familiar with bits and pieces of C.S. Lewis’s life and writings. What you’ll be surprised to discover, however, as you peruse the pages of The A – Z Of C.S. Lewis, is the breadth and depth that his life actually spanned.
The A – Z Of C.S. Lewis isn’t the type of book most people will read from cover to cover. It’s the type of book that you are more likely to use as a reference or to skim until an entry catches your eye. Once you start reading the book, however, you’re likely to find yourself flipping from entry to entry and following the cross-references, as Colin has provided plenty of fascinating facts about C.S. Lewis to hold your interest each time you open the book!
It takes a lot of research and imagination to delve into all of the corners of a person’s life – to pull out the pertinent parts – and to piece them together in a logical yet compelling manner. Kudos to Colin for hitting a home run on all counts and providing us with an invaluable reference.
Published to coincide with the 50th anniversary of C.S. Lewis’s death, The A – Z of C.S. Lewis by Colin Duriez is a great tribute to this influential man’s life.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
