It Had To Be You – Book Review

Okay, I’ll confess. Stories involving around sports themes are not ordinarily my cup of tea. So – when I learned that much of the plot of It Had To Be You by Susan May Warren revolves around ice hockey – I anticipated that Susan’s 462 page novel was going to be a long read for me.

Turns out that I was mistaken. I fell in love with It Had To Be You from the very start!

It Had To Be You is the second book in the Christiansen family series – a faith-based series of romance novels from Tyndale House Publishers in which each of the books is designed to be read on its own.

The central character in It Had To Be You is Christiansen daughter Eden – the family caregiver who has put her own life on hold, without even realizing it, to stand in her younger brother’s shadow as she tries to protect him from himself by running his life.

Eden is an aspiring journalist who resents being stuck writing obituaries, even though her career takes a back seat to her brother Owen and his career. She feels responsible for everything related to Owen – even though no one except herself has placed that burden upon her.

Owen is a headstrong, twenty-year old who has just been signed to his first major league hockey contract – but whose recklessness might just end his career before it even gets started.

Enter Jace – the infamous J-Hammer, who is Owen’s childhood hero turned teammate. Bad boy Jace is the root of Owen’s problems in Eden’s eyes – and to blame for all of his current problems. Or is he?

What would happen if judgmental Eden discovered that Jace wasn’t truly the person Eden believes him to be?

It Had To Be You opens with a letter – meant to be read posthumously – to Eden from her mother. It’s the type of letter that any daughter would love to receive from her mother – the type of letter written by a woman from someone who truly sees their daughter, loves and accepts her for who she is, and bestows her blessing upon her. In many ways, that letter sets the tone for this book.

This is a book whose characters you will love – whose problems you will relate to – whose stories you will want to follow and see through to the end.

Once I started reading It Had To Be You, I did not want to put the book down!

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
