I Like Giving – Book Review

I’m sure that you’ve heard the old adage that money cannot buy happiness. But currently, there is research that suggests that adage might not be entirely true. In November 2011, Elizabeth Dunn and Michael Norton published their research to a few questions they’d been asking for several years:

  • What if money can buy us happiness if we spend it in a different way?
  • If we spent money on others, instead of ourselves, would that make us happier?

Their research confirms what author and giving expert Brad Formosa concurrently discovered: non-compulsory giving makes a huge difference in the quality of our lives and those around us!

Brad is a man on a mission. He wants to transform the world into a more generous, giving place. He doesn’t want people to pay it forward – he wants people to give it forward.

In his new book I Like Giving – The Transforming Power Of A Generous Life, Brad shares personal stories and stories that others have shared on how acts of giving can change the lives of both those who give and those who receive.

Now, a book filled with heartfelt stories on generosity is nice – but I Like Giving contains more than a compilation of tales that will tug at your heartstrings.

I Like Giving also brings up interesting points about leading a life of generosity that you may not have considered. Some of the topics he discusses throughout the book are strategies for giving – how to deal with resistance to generosity – examining your own motivations for giving – and the science of giving.

Brad also reminds us that giving isn’t always about money. Giving the gift of ourselves is the biggest gift of all!

In addition to writing I Like Giving, Brad also founded the ILikeGiving.com website. If you are interested in learning how you can make a difference in the lives of those around you – using whatever resources God has given you to bless others – I encourage you to check out both of these resources!

If a non-profit organization is assembling gift baskets for a silent auction or raffle, donate new items to fill a themed basket.

The book sounds like a great idea/challenge! I’ll have to check out the web site as well. Thanks for all you share on your blog!

What a fabulous book this sounds like. In Crystal Paine’s book Say Goodbye to Survival Mode, she inspired me with how she wanted to save money so she could give more away. Even simple things like using coupons to buy inexpensive toiletries to donate to a women’s shelter. This sounds inspiring. Thanks for sharing with #SmallVictoriesSunday and the chance to win.

I have spent much of my time giving free sewing lessons to anyone in my neighborhood who asked me. I want to expand that and start up a non profit that teaches young and old how to sew. I was trained to be a home economics teacher and am retiring this summer at 62 years old.

Gail, what a fabulous idea! It’s too bad you’re not local – I’d sign up for your classes! 🙂

I love your idea of starting a non-profit to pass your skills and knowledge on to a new generation, young and old.
Best of luck to you in this giveaway! 🙂

I am also teaching my 2 young granddaughters, 9 and 14 how to sew. I know it is going to be a lost skill someday. I would like to teach single mothers who had a desire, how to sew or alter clothing . I happen to know a seamstress with alteration skills is always in demand and needed.
