Living With Alzheimers & Other Dementias

Chicken Soup For The Soul – Living With Alzheimer’s & Other Dementia’s – Book Review

Today I’m going to discuss a topic that strikes fear in the hearts of many people:

That topic is Alzheimer’s.

Let’s face it: Alzheimer’s is a scary disease – one that’s been surrounded by misconceptions, stigmas, and silence for much too long.

Isn’t it time that someone brought Alzheimer’s out of the shadows and into the light?

The folks at Chicken Soup For The Soul – along with the Alzheimer’s Association – believe that those who are impacted by Alzheimer’s and other dementias need a safe place to support one another.

Patients, families, friends and caregivers need to hear one another’s stories and offer one another hope and encouragement.

That’s what Chicken Soup For The Soul – Living With Alzheimer’s & Other Dementias – 101 Stories Of Caregiving, Coping, and Compassion is all about.

Chicken Soup For The Soul – Living With Alzheimer’s & Other Dementias is filled with 101 uplifting and compassionate stories that will support you and your loved ones through all phases of your journey.

It’s one of the most significant books that Chicken Soup has published to date. Even if there isn’t a need in your life for this book today – think of it as a beautiful gift waiting in the wings for the right person when there is a need.

Here’s a peek at what you’ll find inside of Chicken Soup For The Soul – Living With Alzheimer’s & Other Dementias:

Angela Temashenka Geiger – the Chief Strategy Officer of the Alzheimer’s Association – says:

Alzheimer’s is a disease that no one can face alone. We draw strength from our family, friends, and sometimes even strangers – people who are walking the same path alongside us.

Anyone affected by Alzheimer’s or another dementia should feel a sense of ownership when they pick up this book. I hope that in these stories, you can see yourself, you can learn something, and that you are proud of this movement – of this caring and compassionate community – that you’ve helped build.

I urge you to take action in the fight…

I would like to win this book, because I had a grandmother who had alzheimers and it’s such a widespread illness that affects so many people. I love Chicken Soup for the Soul books and I would love to read some encouraging positive stories on this topic.

I’m sorry to hear that your grandmother had Alzheimer’s – but you bring up an important point about how widespread this illness has become.
That’s why a book like this is so important.
Not only are the stories positive and encouraging, but it deals with things from so many angles, there is truly a story for everyone!

My father in law has dementia and it is quite difficult for my sister in law and her family to care for him. When we visit, we have to tell him who we are. It is his birthday today but I don’t think he’ll realize that when we visit later! Have a great weekend! patsy

It is SO difficult to see our loved ones in decline – especially on special occasions such as these!
I pray that God will give you all grace during your visit today and that he will have clarity of mind and spirit.
Have a blessed weekend as well!

  3. Pam Garrett says:

My dad is slowly dying from dementia. He could pass away any day now. He has been bedridden for the past four years and my mom has taken care of him in their home. I see the toll being a caregiver has taken on her and it really scares me. Thank you for posting about this book. If I don’t win a copy, I’ll buy one.

  4. I would like to win this book because I have always loved the chicken soup books, they have helped me get over many rough spots…and now I am dealing with my mother who has early onset alzheimers. Life is not easy, very stressful, maybe this book would talk to me…

  9. This book is close to my heart as we had the difficult task of moving my Mom into a secured dementia unit in early March. It’s been difficult watching a woman who raised seven children slowly fade into a little shell of a woman. Whether I win it or not, I’m definitely going to read this book!

  10. Trish says:

Alzheimer is a horrible disease. My grandmother had it. I worked with Alzheimer patients for years. And it was so sad to watch how that disease robbed those folks of their quality of life. This sounds like a great book. I would love to have it…because you never know who or when this disease will strike. Thanks for this review.

  12. ~ linda says:

I am so grateful that the Chicken Soup folks have put these stories together for the many who are dealing with various dementias and Alzheimers’. My precious mother had vascular dementia for 16 years that we know of and I was her caregiver for 15 of those. I learned through trial and error about how to deal with it, about all the many stages, and how they might be feeling inside with the tormenting mind, the sounds, the fears, the anxieties and so much. It is so important for people to try to understand what their loved one is going through or even what one in early stages is feeling and can try to cope with the changes they are feeling going on inside their minds. Oh, this subject is so important to me. I actually have begun to write a series on caregiving and dementia/other illnesses too for Soli Deo Gloria Sisterhood and have given one talk on journaling, caregiving for one with dementia/Alzheimers for my local Area Agency on Aging and will be doing it again in November for Caregivers Month.
Sorry I just went on and on. Just my subject and I am thrilled about this book.

    Blessings and shalom,

  14. Barbara says:

I so enjoy the encouragement of the other Chicken Soup books and I know this one will touch and encourage many more. I can’t imagine what it would be like to have a loved one with this disease. I’d love to win it to read and donate to my church’s library where it will reach so many more people! Everything that touches us does so with a reason of growth.

  15. Melanie Backus says:

I would love to win this book because I have an aunt that is slipping away from me little by little. I am sure this book will be a great help and bring comfort.
