Magellan - National Answer Your Cat's Question Day

It’s National Answer Your Cat’s Question Day!

Did you know that today is National Answer Your Cat’s Question Day?

If your cats are anything like mine, they are constantly asking you questions throughout the day – so, when Peggy Frezon invited Create With Joy to share an answer to one of my cat’s burning questions for her Guideposts column, Pawprints On My Heart, how could I resist?

I didn’t have to long for a question to arise from Magellan, my extremely curious, one-year old Maine Coon cat!

Magellan’s Burning Question

Because it’s in his nature to explore, Magellan loves to gaze out of windows and open closed doors. Whenever my husband and I leave home to run errands, he tirelessly awaits our return as he wonders what entices us to leave the comforts of home.

Recently, as I returned from an outing, Magellan jumped up, peered at me with his expressive eyes and trilled:

Why am I an indoors-only cat?

My Answer

Lovingly, I scooped my 14-pound bundle of fur into my arms and replied:

Magellan – you are the apple of my eye – a sweet angel sent from heaven above. I love you. Because I cherish you, I want to spend as many moments with you as possible.

When you came into our home, I promised to do everything within my power to ensure that you live a long and healthy life. One of the most important ways I keep this promise is by providing you with a safe environment in a loving home. Did you know that by keeping you indoors, your life expectancy increases significantly?

Research shows that the average lifespan for outdoor only cats is approximately 1 year of age. Indoor-outdoor cats, on average, live for 3 to 6 years. By contrast, indoor cats have an average lifespan of 13 to 15 years!

As you can see, Magellan, living indoors is an act of love. May you be a part of our family for many years to come!

My cat is asking why I am glued to this stupid machine.
Even tho it makes interesting noises I yell at her when she tries to taste those tempting cords.

Her biggest question was why I did not hop up and run for joy when the magic kitchen box beeped signalling something warm and wonderful had appeared for me.

And you know, I did not have a satisfying answer for her, so now I am wadding up old paper recipts (her favorite toys) tossing them in the air, and I will go see what the magic box has prepared for us to share.

Good reasons for Magellan to be an indoor kitten 🙂

One of my two cats is determined to go outside. We think he must have been an outdoor cat before we adopted him. No amount of reasoning will settle his desire. He is constantly trying to run out the door, but at least with the back door, Mom has trained us dogs to go after him and retrieve him. He actually loves dogs, so it works well even though he is pissed we stop him.

      Hi Emma,

Has your cat been neutered? If not, perhaps that can curtail those roaming urges a bit.
Very cool that you have canine helpers to shepherd your cat when he goes near the door!
Kudos for the efforts you take to keep your cats safe and sound!
