Reading: Are You Up For A Challenge?
So many books… So little time… As the New Year stretches before you and you think of all the things you’d like to accomplish this year, have you ever wondered how you will get to all of the books you’d love to read – and how to choose the books you will read?
Participating in a Reading Challenge can help! It’s a fun way to achieve new reading goals – to connect with other readers – and to discover new books and interests!
To kick off January, here are a few Reading Challenges I’m participating in – along with some other events of interest! Look for more events and challenges is upcoming editions of The Book Nook at Create With Joy.
New Year’s Resolution Reading Challenge
What do you want to accomplish in the New Year? No matter what your goals are, reading the right book can help you reach your goal, keep your resolution, or complete your project!
To help you start the year off right by reading books that support your goals, resolutions, and projects, librarian and blogger Joy Weese Moll hosts an annual New Year Year Resolution Reading Challenge to encourage you to act on your goals!
Here are the books I’m reading for this challenge:
- Declutter Now! by Lindon and Sherry Gareis
- Declutter Now! Study Guide by Lindon and Sherry Gareis
- Chicken Soup For The Soul – The Power Of Forgiveness
- Hungry For God – Starving For Time by Lori Hatcher
Visit Joy’s blog to sign up for the New Year’s Resolution Challenge and share your resolutions and books with us today!
January 2015 Poisonwood Bible Readalong
What are your personal reading goals for 2015? One of my goals is to read more books solely for my personal reading pleasure. So – when I saw that my friend Tanya at Mom’s Small Victories – along with co-hostesses Lost In Books and Savvy Working Goal – were kicking off their Travel The World In Books Reading Challenge with a Poisonwood Bible Readalong – I could not wait to sign up!
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver is a 1999 Pulitzer Prize Nominee for Fiction and the recipient of numerous literary awards. The book tells the story of Nathan Price – a fierce, evangelical Baptist – who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it — from garden seeds to Scripture — is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family’s tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.
Each week, Tanya is providing discussion questions on her blog – and a Twitter discussion is scheduled for January 28th. To sign up, visit Mom’s Small Victories!
Winter 2015 – Mini Bloggiesta (January 17-19)
Are you a book blogger? Do you have some book-related tasks you’d like to get done? Then join us for the upcoming Mini Bloggiesta – sign-ups are currently open at Bloggiesta!
Bloggiesta is a blogging marathon that helps book bloggers to improve their blogs by completing items on their To Do lists in the company of a supportive community! The site leaders and participants hosts events and mini events throughout the year and organize educational and motivational challenges and Twitter chats. Each event is self-directed, however – you determine how much or how little you participate, and decide exactly what you want to do.
My goals for the Winter 2015 Mini Bloggiesta are to:
- Launch the Book Nook Blog Party at Create With Joy.
- Update and organize my bookshelves.
- Update my review calendar.
- Write 1-2 book reviews.
- Set up my 2015 review shelf on GoodReads.
- Connect with other Bloggiesta participants.
A Winter’s Respite Read-A-Thon – January 26-February 1
Are you interested in reading more books this year, but having difficulty finding the time to do so? If so, consider joining a Read-A-Thon! These special events offer you the opportunity to set aside a few days to focus on reading those books you can never seem to get around to – or to catch up on several books on your To Be Read list if you’re feeling particularly ambitious!
If you’re new to Read-A-Thons, or looking for an easy-going event that won’t overwhelm you, may I recommend A Winter’s Respite Read-A-Thon, hosted by my friend Michelle of True Book Addict? This is one of four seasonal read-a-thons Michelle hosts. For this particular read-a-thon, you are free to read whatever you like, and participate is an optional Twitter party (dates to be announced). Sign-ups are open at the Seasons Of Reading website – hope to see you there!

Great idea. I take part in It’s Monday. What are you reading? but that relates more to children’s picture books to Ya books, which I read a lot of. Will be good to have another option for sharing for adult books.
