Holiday Mashed Potatoes Recipe

If you are looking for a delicious mashed potatoes recipe to complement your holiday menu, then this is it!

In our household, we generally reserve mashed potatoes for holidays and special occasions (because the gravy we make to accompany it is so decadently sinful) – but growing up, mashed potatoes were a favorite accompaniment to Sunday dinners as well!

This recipe is a little bit mashed – a little bit smashed – but totally satisfying and extremely gratifying!

We are including Holiday Mashed Potatoes on our Easter Menu this year – but be sure to bookmark it for your Thanksgiving and Christmas Menus as well!

Ingredients

5 Large Russet Potatoes
1 Stick Butter
8 Ounces Cream Cheese
1 Teaspoon Salt
1 Tablespoon Pepper

Instructions

1. Wash the potatoes thoroughly and cut them into large pieces, leaving the skin on.

2. Place the potatoes in a pot of water and bring the water to a boil. Cook the potatoes until they are done and soft enough to be pierced with a fork.

3. Transfer the potatoes to the bowl of an electric mixer with a paddle attachment.

4. Beat the potatoes for a minute or two, then add the melted butter and cream cheese. Continue to beat the potatoes for another minute or two until all of the ingredients are incorporated. Your goal in this step is to evenly distribute the ingredients, not to remove the lumps.

5. Season the potatoes with salt and pepper and beat until the ingredients are evenly distributed.

Serves 8 to 10 people.

You really don’t taste the cream cheese in the recipe, but it makes a huge difference in the consistency (extra creamy!)

  2. Lynne says:

I’m really looking forward to mashed potatoes this Easter – I’ve been serving different potatoes for Thanksgiving and Christmas for the past few years (and again, I reserve this mainly for holidays) so it will be a real treat!

But, this makes a PERFECT accompaniment to your Thanksgiving and Christmas meals too, so if you are looking for a good mashed potatoes recipe for those menus (or you just love mashed potatoes anytime of year) – be sure to pin or bookmark!

  3. Eli says:

Mmm, mashed potatoes or potatoes in any form or shape. We love them a lot in our household and try not to include them in most dinners. Just like Carla said, I’ve never used creme cheese to complement the taste, will it be our next best thing? I’ll definitely give it a go. Thanks for sharing! x

  4. I wonder sometimes where these holiday traditions came from? Nevertheless, mashed potatoes are a favorite in our household. Thanks for sharing a cool recipe!

  9. Amanda Smith says:

I love to add cream cheese to mashed potatoes. I make them for the Holidays too, but instead of just 5 potatoes, it takes a 10# bag to feed our crew. Sometimes, I add a bit of real cream too. I think I am hungry now! LOL

There are two things I like doing in this world… one is programming and the second is cooking… and I’m Irish… and I LOVE mashed potatoes haha

No joke, I will be trying to make this tonight (tonight is Chili night and this sounds like a good pairing).

I’ll let you know how it goes!

(The cream cheese btw… never thought about that, that’s exciting!)

Yum, yum, cream cheese added to the mashed potatoes?? I just have to try this! In our house we do mashed potatoes regularly, maybe once or twice a week, because I’m a potato freak. I’ll definitely have to try this recipe next time!

  16. Carla A says:

Thanks for the recipe…those look AMAZING! I would certainly have to limit myself to major holidays with that, as I think I would dive in the bowl head first and not come up for air until they were gone. Can you tell I’ve been on a weight loss program?!? LOL! No really, those look wonderful!

  19. Jennifer says:

Because of my dairy allergy I’m not able to use cream cheese (I have an alternate for butter) but the recipe sounds delicious and the picture of it is making me hungry. I only peel my potatoes if I have to which means I’m probably making lefse, so it’s nice to see a recipe where the potatoes aren’t peeled.

  20. FinchnWren says:

Love mashed potatoes..my husband makes some great ones using the little yellow potatoes also with the skin on!
We’ve never used cream cheese, so that’s a definite to try.
    Thanks!

  21. Yona Williams says:

I have yet to find a way to make mashed potatoes that I find irresistible, but I really love the idea of adding cream cheese to a mashed potatoes recipe so I Pinned this. Something seems to go wrong for me (like they are too dry or too liquidy or just don’t plain taste right). I’m also not a gravy person, but every once in a while, I do get a craving. For now, I enjoy eating other people’s mashed potatoes. You have me curious about that gravy now.

Hi Yona, so nice to see you!
      The gravy is amazing!
It is my husband’s recipe – I never understood why people liked gravy until I tasted his recipe.
It is thick and the best I’ve ever tasted!

  22. Andi says:

Wow! Cream cheese in the potatoes – I love that idea. Don’t think I have ever had that! My hubby uses celery root mixed in with his potatoes which makes them a little healthier.

  23. Elaine Lombardi says:

My daughter-in-law loves mashed potatoes. I’m going to forward your post to her.

  24. Toni says:

Anything with potatoes is a hit in my house, especially mashed taters. I make them in my stand mixer, which makes it super easy and FAST. My boys are always delighted when I serve up purple potatoes for a change of pace. The recipe is quite similar but uses sour cream instead of cream cheese. Yummers! 🙂

  27. Angi says:

I will have to try this. Never tried adding cream cheese as I always thought it would make it too rich but I will give this a try.

  28. Tiffany says:

My family is a big fan of mashed potatoes with the skin on. I normally use red potatoes and blend them with lots of milk, butter and salt in my Kitchen Aid mixer. Using cream cheese instead sounds like a great alternative. Thanks for sharing this recipe.
