Asia’s New Wings by Clifton & Michelle Cottom – Book Review
On September 11, 2001 – a day that will forever live on in infamy in the hearts and minds of good people everywhere – evil terrorists orchestrated an unprecedented attack on America by crashing commercial airplanes in New York City, in Pennsylvania, and in Washington, DC.
Close to 3000 people died as a result of those attacks.
Eight of the victims were children.
On the morning of September 11, eleven-year old Asia SiVon Cottom was excitedly preparing for her four-day National Geographic field trip to the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary in Santa Barbara, California. She was one of three local DC students who had been chosen for the opportunity to participate in the Sustainable Seas Expedition – one of America’s premier undersea projects.
Asia – the beloved daughter of Clifton and Michelle Cottom and sister of Isaiah Cottom – never made it to her destination. She was one of eight children who died on an airplane that day – one of eight children who never even made it to their teenage years.
If you are looking for a book to help you remember and process what happened on that fateful day – if you are a survivor who is still trying to make sense of it all – if you are a parent who has lost a child and are trying to work through the pain of your loss – add Asia’s New Wings – The Untold Story Of A Young Girl Lost On 9/11 by Clifton & Michelle Cotton to your reading list.
Just be sure to have a box of tissues nearby because you are going to need them!
Asia’s New Wings is written by her parents – people of faith – and the book does a beautiful job of paying tribute to a little girl whose life was cut way too short by a senseless tragedy that never should have happened. The book takes you through the raw emotions that any parent in their shoes and a sibling going through loss might experience – yet it also shows you how God walks with us through even our deepest losses and helps us heal from them.
There are moments in Asia’s New Wings that choked me up – like Michelle’s response to the FBI sending a pregnant agent to her home to tell her that her daughter had died.
There are also moments that gave me pause – such as the authors’ reflections on the positive and not-so-positive ways that people have responded in the aftermath of their tragedy.
Michelle Cottom writes:
Asia wasn’t a patriot who gave her life for her country. She was an innocent little girl who got caught up in the wrong place at the wrong time. She was just living her life.
For some readers, this might seem to be a particularly difficult subject to read about, but Asia’s New Wings is an inspiring story that deserves to be told and needs to be read.
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

SOunds like a difficult but important way to “never forget” and honor those who have been touched in deeply personal ways by this day in history. THank you for sharing this message and book , R.
This sounds like a powerful read and a wonderful tribute to a life cut way too short
That would be a tough book to read.
After September 11 happened, I focused on the adults who died. I also thought about the children too. The children who had suddenly become orphans. I didn’t realize children had lost their lives too. Eleven years old is such a wonderful age. I can’t imagine the pain experienced by the parents. This is why I would truly love to read this book.

Best of luck to you Tea – it’s a very poignant story!
This book sounds powerful! I read a remarkable biography of one of the children who died in the Columbine incident, and I have heard one of the fathers of the children who died in the Virginia Tech massacre speak. Such senseless tragedies! Thanks for linking up at Literacy Musing Mondays.

Thank you Leslie for stopping by! These types of memoirs are so powerful and educational. Bet that was one powerful speech!
I would like to win this book to read and to share with my family.
I particularly enjoy reading different views or outlooks of a known event or situation, and this book sounds like a very heartfelt account of such pain, and coping, and healing , it would be a privilege to be able to read the thoughts and wisdom of these parents.
Thank you for the opportunity.

It’s sad in places but ultimately it’s a wonderful story about a parent’s love and memories of a special little girl. 🙂
