The Aleppo Code – Book Tour Background
This week, Terry Brennan, the author of The Jerusalem Prophecies series, is on tour with Kregel Blog Tours to celebrate the release of the final book in the series – The Aleppo Code!
I was first introduced to Terry Brennan a few years ago when I received The Brotherhood Conspiracy – the second book in The Jerusalem Prophecies series – for review. I thought my husband would also enjoy the book and I was right. He liked it so much, that he began hounding me non-stop (for two years!) to get him The Aleppo Code the moment it became available!
So, not only did I surprise him with The Aleppo Code – I invited him to review it.
Of course, my husband is not one for coloring in-between the lines. He said:
I can’t imagine reading The Aleppo Code without The Sacred Cipher and The Brotherhood Conspiracy under your belt.
So, instead of reviewing The Aleppo Code individually – I’d like to review The Jerusalem Prophecies Series as a whole.
Kregel must have been on the same page, because they generously sent us copies of those books as well!
So, for this tour, I’m doing things a little differently. I am featuring my husband’s guest review of The Jerusalem Prophecies series as a whole, as well as a synopsis and video trailer of The Aleppo Code for those specifically interested in this exciting thriller.
For the record, my husband is an extremely tough reviewer who rarely gets excited about anything and he loved these books – so if this genre is up your alley, be sure to check them out!
The Jerusalem Prophecies Series – Trilogy Review
I recently had the pleasure of reading The Aleppo Code by Terry Brennan, the final book in the Jerusalem Trilogy and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve been anticipating the release of this book ever since I completed Book Two of the series, The Brotherhood Conspiracy.
I have read many books over the years but rarely do I come across a book (or series of books) that truly captures my interest, flows as well, and is as tightly integrated and as much fun as this trilogy!
My introduction to this series began a few years ago when my wife shared Book Two, The Brotherhood Conspiracy, with me. At first, I didn’t realize that it was part of a trilogy and found it a bit difficult to follow. Even so, I found the writing captivating and couldn’t put the book down. When I figured out that the book was actually part of a series, I ordered the first book, The Sacred Cipher, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Reading The Sacred Cipher brought the second book into focus.
So, what is the Jerusalem Prophecies Trilogy all about? Well, it’s an action-packed suspense story that contains a series of quests. Each book takes you on a thrill ride where you make an amazing discovery. Like Raiders of the Lost Ark, there is intrigue, danger, riddles to solve, and a surprise ending. Like The Lord of the Rings, the trilogy is really one continuous story that involves the same band of characters.
Of course, there are a few differences. The Jerusalem Prophecies Trilogy, unlike The Lord of the Rings, contains three distinct quests. Each book starts with a discovery that leads our protagonists to search for an item – one that will cause them to reach beyond themselves to find what they seek. Unlike Raiders of the Lost Ark, there is not just one central larger-than-life character but an entire band of characters with a realness to them that is quite captivating.
Tom Bohannon, the leader of this band of questers, is the head of the Bowery Mission in New York. He and his wife Annie are normal people you would invite over to dinner. Tom might be an elder at your church but he is real and fallible. He is someone who struggles with self-doubt and God’s leading, yet remains faithful to God’s call.
Tom is definitively not Indiana Jones, but there is a little Frodo Baggins sprinkled inside of him.
In this series we travel to many places, but for me, it really didn’t matter where the story was set – what mattered was the characters and how we connected to them in the midst of their journey. Connection: that’s where The Jerusalem Prophecies series excels.
These novels are Christian in nature and several ideas, while not explicitly stated, are conveyed throughout the books:
If we knew where God would lead us, many of us would probably not choose to go.
In His Word, God says He will test us with fire and discipline us.
God is good, but the path He leads us on for our benefit and His Glory is not often easy, even when it is right.
If I interviewed Tom Bohannon, before this quest and told him the cost of the journey before him, I am convinced that, like Jesus, he would ask for this cup to pass from him.
Like most of us, it is best that God only shows us what we must do now – today – for “today has enough trouble of its own”. That is often times all the strength we have – that is the internal struggle that takes place in the midst of this trilogy.
And that is what makes these books special. Whether running from the Prophets Guard or Shin Bet, exploring under the Temple Mount or the Negev or Babylon, this story is about real people whose stories are portraits of faithfulness told in an honest and sincere way.
I hope that you will read this trilogy from beginning to end, particularly The Aleppo Code, because these books are well worth the ride. Your heart with be warmed by what you read. Given the chance, I would give this book and this trilogy 6 out of 5 stars.
The Aleppo Code – Book Synopsis
The living members of Tom Bohannon’s band of adventurers gather again in Jerusalem –physically battered, emotionally exhausted, spiritually challenged, and in various stages of shock – to examine a copy of the tenth-century Aleppo Codex, the oldest complete text of Jewish scripture. What the clues inside reveal could lead to the reuniting of the Ark of the Covenant with its true source of power, a weapon that could lead to victory for this ragged bunch trying to save the world.
Hunted by the relentless assassins of the Prophet’s Guard and caught in the web of an international conspiracy plotting the conquest of Europe, Bohannon’s team searches the ruins of Ancient Babylon. Their search lands them amid the chaos that engulfs western Iraq, but they must press on to accomplish one of the most pivotal pieces of end-times prophecy. This intrepid group will uncover secrets that require them to risk everything for their faith, their country, and the peace of all mankind.
Unfolding against the backdrop of an Israeli/U.S. strike against Iran and the planned economic overthrow of the European Union by the sinister, secret head of the international Muslim Brotherhood, The Aleppo Code is a heart-pounding race. Brennan takes an epic story on a grand scale and tells it primarily through the eyes of one man who is desperately trying to save the world as he follows God’s purpose for his life.
