The Women Of Faith Conferences Changed My Life

In September 1996, a few years after I dedicated my life to God, I heard that a special women’s conference was coming to town.

Something about the title – The Joyful Journey – spoke to my heart.

I decided to attend.

After all, who couldn’t use a little more joy in their lives?

The conference was held in a large church on the East Coast. It was 1 of 10 Women Of Faith conferences launched across the United States that year.

Little did I – or anyone else at that time – know that this conference would mark the beginning of The Women Of Faith phenomenon – a series of events that would transform the lives of more than 5 million women over the next 20 years!

I just knew that God was at work and I wanted to be where He was.

To this day, I remember everyone’s collective excitement as the conference began and we began to sing and praise God.

I remember the audience’s anticipation as each new speaker walked across the stage.

I remember sitting in that church audience, transfixed by speaker after amazing speaker, feeling like each woman on the stage was speaking directly to me.

Lucy Swindoll made me laugh as she spoke about the perils and promises of the single life. Marilyn Meeberg encouraged me as she spoke about various life issues we women face and how God sustains us through them all.

Thelma Wells moved me to tears as she shared the difficult childhood she rose above, and with courage and graciousness, inspired me to “bee all that I could be!” To this day, she remains one of the most inspirational women I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting!

These are a few of the books I purchased from the first Women Of Faith conference held in September 1996!

During breaks, we had the opportunity to meet the speakers personally. Because I am a bibliophile – and because each of the speakers impacted me so deeply – I naturally bought as many books as I could! Each of the speakers graciously autographed each book with messages of encouragement and love. Their words continue to inspire me to this day!

Word quickly spread about these amazing speakers and how attending a Women of Faith Conference could change your life. By year two, so many women hungered to hear the Women Of Faith speak, logistics necessitated a move from large churches to large arenas to accommodate the growing demand!

I also had the privilege of attending one of the larger conferences. It was a blessing to be part of a stadium filled with women thirsting to hear God speak through other women. I was thrilled to see my favorite speakers return as well as hear God speak through new women like Sheila Walsh on the tour!

However, I’ll never forget the intimacy of the first event – the opportunity to meet with each of the speakers personally – and how special and loved each and every speaker made me feel.

This message from Thelma Wells means more to me than she will ever know!

Now, the cinema event relives the magic by taking viewers on a journey of Women of Faith throughout the years.
