Finding God In The Ruins by Matt Bays – Book Review
Each of us has the potential to be a powerful witness for God. Each of us has the capacity to tell a powerful story about God’s redemptive power and grace based on our personal life experiences.
But first – before we tell those stories – some of us have to wade through a lot of muck to move past the dark and twisty experiences of our life.
If you are ready to wade through the muck – if you are ready to shine a light in the dark places in your past and ask difficult questions such as, “If God Is love, why do we hurt so much?” – then you’re ready for the insights and perspective that Matt Bays offers in Finding God In The Ruins – How God Redeems Pain.
In Finding God In The Ruins, Matt invites you to take off your mask – to be transparent – and to grapple with the difficult theological questions that many Christians would rather avoid, but that anyone who has experienced deep pain and trauma in their life must wrestle with and reconcile before they can truly experience the deep and abundant love of God.
Matt’s writing hooked me from the moment I picked up the book:
God, in real life, is nothing like the God we’ve been taught about in church. Anyone who has been through tragedy, pain, trauma, or devastating loss knows that in these moments, and in the terrible aftermath, hell often feels much more powerful than heaven.
In the midst of suffering, we find ourselves trying to hear the absence of God, sometimes while doubting his very existence. And although those around us think they have the answers, their well-intentioned words often translate as cruel and useless. What if we aren’t going to “get better”? What if our sufferings and doubt are necessary components – or even the very essence of our faith?
Finding God In The Ruins is an honest, moving, beautifully written book in which Matt uses his personal life experiences to show us how God reveals Himself to the hurting. In many ways, the book reminds me of a contemporary version of the book of Job.
To enhance your experience, Matt provides discussion questions as well as questions for personal reflection at the end of the book.
I found this book deeply moving and highly recommend it to anyone who is trying to come to terms with the past.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
