The Emerging Sensitive

The Emerging Sensitive by Maria Hill – Book Review

I grew up as a highly sensitive person in a family where sensitivity was not a highly valued trait. I was always being told to stop being so sensitive and to toughen up. It wasn’t until 1997, when I came across Elaine Aron’s ground-breaking book, The Highly Sensitive Person, that I was first introduced to the concept that heightened sensitivity is a gift.

Reading that book changed my life. It helped me begin to embrace and understand who I was.

Now, Maria Hill is carrying on the tradition that Elaine Aron started in the Nineties. Through her new book, The Emerging Sensitive, she’s helping a whole new generation of highly sensitive people understand and embrace who they are and helping them live in a world that doesn’t understand them.

The Emerging Sensitive – A Guide For Finding Your Place In The World is divided into four parts.

  • Part One focuses on helping readers Understand the Highly Sensitive Trait. A few things I found fascinating are that one out of five people are highly sensitive and that actual genetic differences have been found in the nervous systems of highly sensitive people. Surprisingly, culture does not seem to impact the development of this trait.

  • Part Two discusses the Importance and Value of Frameworks as tools for helping Highly Sensitive People navigate the world.

  • Part Three, Getting A Handle On The World, discusses why Highly Sensitive People have been marginalized in the past, explores ways that the Personal Development Movement has created an environment for space and change, and identifies some of the challenges that they must rise to if they want to find their place in our ever evolving world.

  • Part Four, Claiming Agency, explains what agency is – identifies the skills and tools that Highly Sensitive People need to yield positive results using their sensitivity – and provides the questions that Highly Sensitive People need to ask to explore new possibilities in their life.

One of the things that Maria Hill says in The Emerging Sensitive is:

Because highly sensitive people take in so much information, they not only become overstimulated but they also have difficulty making choices about what actions to take.

One of the strengths of Maria’s book – probably the thing that I like most about The Emerging Sensitive – is that it contains just the right amount of information. The book is easy to read – neither too long nor too short – and very insightful.

I definitely recommend The Emerging Sensitive to anyone who classifies themselves as a Highly Sensitive Person or believes they might be one, and to anyone who is living with a Highly Sensitive and wants to understand their loved one better!

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars!

I should read this book. I’ve never been very good at dealing with several highly sensitive people in my life. Maybe this would help me. Thanks so much for sharing this at Booknificent Thursday last week. I’m sorry I’m late getting around!
