The Five Truths About Work-Life Balance – Book Review

Every now and then you come across a book that seems somewhat simplistic on the surface but, in actuality, contains exactly the words of wisdom that you need to hear during a particular season in your life.

Many readers are going to be surprised to discover that The Five Truths About Work-Life Balance by Jae Ellard is one of those special gems of a book.

The Five Truths About Work-Life Balance doesn’t come wrapped in the jazziest of covers and – when you flip through it – you might be inclined to give it a quick run-through when you see that the book actually contains very few words surrounded by lots of white space (or gray space) on those pages.

But, that would be a grave mistake.

The further and further you get into the book, the more you will appreciate those blank spaces, because they give you the time and space you need to really pause and think about the things that the author is sharing – concepts that will cause you to transform your approach to creating and leading a “balanced” life.

In The Five Truths About Work-Life Balance, Jae shares five truths she has discovered to be true in her life and – at the end of the book – says that “what you choose to do with these truths is up to you”. The more I read, the more interesting I found the book to be, and I discovered a number of concepts to reflect upon and to apply to my own life.

A good book is not something that you read once and walk away from. A good book is one that causes you to think, to interact with it, and that changes you as a result of the time that you spent with it and the author.

With that in mind, here are a few of the questions I’ve been asking myself after reading The Five Truths About Work-Life Balance, based on my own personal notes:

  • What does balance mean to me?
  • What causes me to go in and out of balance in my own life?
  • How can I connect more deeply to the world around me?
  • What issues and conversations am I avoiding that create imbalance?
  • What choices do I need to make to create balance for myself?

Based on my definition, it appears that The Five Truths About Work-Life Balance by Jae Ellard is a very good book.

I rate this book 4 stars.
