Having A Martha Home The Mary Way – Book Review

One of my favorite stories in the Bible is the story of Martha and Mary – two sisters who loved the Lord and each other, but who had very different priorities when it came to life.

Martha was the older of the two sisters – the “responsible” one – the one who carried the weight of the world on her shoulders. When Jesus came to their home for a visit, she focused on making sure everything ran smoothly – and got a little miffed when her more sociable younger sister, Mary, made hanging out with Jesus and pouring over His every word a greater priority than helping her with the hostessing tasks that clearly needed to be done.

I like this story because I think it’s one that every woman can relate to. Each of us tends to lean towards being more of a Martha or a Mary when it comes to tending to our housekeeping and hospitality duties. That’s why using the story of Martha and Mary to set the backdrop for blogger-turned-author Sarah Mae’s book, Haing A Martha Home The Mary Way – 31 Days To A Clean House And A Satisfied Soul is so ingenious – and why it’s a book that both the Martha’s and the Mary’s of the world can benefit from.

Having A Martha Home The Mary Way is a 31-day plan to help us bring balance into our lives by cultivating the art of gentle homemaking, which Sarah Mae defines as “the ability to be gentle and kind with ourselves in the process of making and keeping a home while being gentle and kind to those around us.” She writes that “it is not a clean house that defines good homemaking, but rather a warm, inviting place that is filled with love.”

To help us achieve this goal, Sarah has created a 31-day program that consists of devotional readings, Bible study, and Martha and Mary challenges that will help you get your spiritual and physical homes in order. The Mary challenges allow you to sit down with God – read Scripture – and partake in reflective journaling and devotional activities that will deepen your relationship with the Lord. The Martha challenges break down cleaning tasks into manageable steps for those of us who are not natural-born cleaners.

In addition to the program, there are a few additional features including bonus tips for the decorating challenged and ideas for getting your children involved!

As one who is definitely more Mary-like than Martha-like when it comes to life, I am finding Having A Martha Home The Mary Way both inspirational and practical. Read this book with your markers and highlighters in hand!

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
