Moments & Days – How Our Holy Celebrations Shape Our Faith – Book Review
When we are young, we have very little concept of time. As children, time seems to move very slowly and it seems like our best days are always before us. We anticipate starting school, turning sweet 16, and achieving certain milestones in life. Too often, we spend our time as if we will live forever.
Eventually, as our days begin to fly by and our years begin to morph into one another, we realize that time is a valuable commodity we should treasure – not something we should let slip through our fingers like grains of sand.
Suddenly, the cry of Psalm 90:12 makes sense:
So teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
In her new book, Moments & Days – How The Holy Celebrations Shape Our Faith, Michelle Van Loon speaks to those of us who want to understand the significance of time from a spiritual perspective and want to bring an awareness of the sacred into their daily lives.
I expected Moments & Days to primarily be a reference book filled with descriptions of church holidays, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that Michelle provides us with a much richer experience than that in her book!
You’ll find plenty of information about both the Jewish historical and biblical feasts and the Christian calendar, which Michelle is uniquely qualified to write about since her heritage is Jewish but her faith is Christian.
What I appreciate most about Moments & Days is how Michelle uses Scripture to help us to understand these events through the lens of the Bible. Michelle provides many thoughtful reflections and interesting ideas that help us incorporate each celebration into our spiritual lives.
Michelle even includes some delicious recipes in the back of the book!
If you want to be more attuned to God’s presence in your daily life throughout the seasons of the year and celebrate His goodness in season and out – if you want to enrich and deepen your worship experience – and if you want to learn how to “redeem your time” for God, then I encourage you to add Moments & Days to your spiritual reading list!
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
