NKJV Word Study Bible – Book Review
What is your favorite way to study the Bible?
When I really want to understand a passage, I like to dissect and dig into the meaning of each of a passage’s key words.
That’s why I was excited to receive the NKJV Word Study Bible – 1700 Key Words That Unlock The Meaning Of The Bible from Thomas Nelson Publishers. Instead of interrupting your time in God’s Word by digging through a concordance or looking up individual passages and words on a computer, this Bible offers you the convenience of reading about key words that will help illuminate important passages right in the body of the text!
The reason that these word studies are so important is that the words we read in English often have one meaning in our language – but, in the original Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek language, the words often conveyed a richer meaning than we would normally receive from our modern-day reading of the text. The word studies – which are highlighted in green boxes throughout the text – also provide helpful cross-references to other passages throughout Scripture.
In addition to 1700 Word Studies, the NKJV Word Study Bible features:
- The New King James Version translation of the Bible (my favorite) in a two-column format and a font that’s large enough for the average reader to see!
- Presentation Page
- Book Introductions with Words To Watch For
- Words of Christ in Red
- Several Indexes
- Concordance
- Full Color Maps
Now, I really like the concept behind the NKJV Word Study Bible, but after a few days of exclusive use, I’ve discovered a few of its limitations as well.
First, even though I enjoy the convenience of detailed word studies at my fingertips, the the NKJV Word Study Bible did not always include the words that I wanted to research. I still needed to use my concordance and the other reference tools that I had hoped I could forgo once this Study Bible arrived.
Second, because the focus of the NKJV Word Study Bible is on the word studies, you still need a traditional Study Bible with more generalized reference notes if you are doing research for a class or Bible study.
Overall, the NKJV Word Study Bible makes a nice addition to your reference library if you enjoy word studies and are looking for a specialty Bible in this genre. However, if you are on a limited budget or have limited shelf space, you might find a different Study Bible will better suit your needs.
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Glad to know about this new reference/study bible. I like using a bible that has pretty extensive footnoted commentary and pages on special topics of interest. I think I would like to have the added information on selected words. They might not be ones that I would have thought to look up or research further. The habit of inquiring about words could then be formed and extended to the use of other reference books as a matter of course during bible study. Thanks for the helpful review!
