Bible Journaling With Kids In 5 Easy Steps

Are you looking for a fun way to spend time with your children as you help them to blossom spiritually? Would you enjoy documenting your spiritual journey as you spend quality devotional time with the Lord?

If so, then Bible Journaling is the perfect spiritual activity for you and your kids!

Bible Journaling is a spiritual discipline that encourages us to read God’s Word and to creatively record what He is saying to us in the pages of our Bibles. There are many ways to participate in this popular pastime. Highlighting key verses, writing prayerful responses, coloring images, painting and drawing are just a few ways we can worship God in our Bibles!

Children are natural Bible journalers because they don’t worry about creating perfect pages – instead, they respond to the Lord with open, teachable hearts. We can learn so much from children as they journal in their Bibles. It’s a privilege to help them discover that “the Word of God is alive and active” in their lives! (Hebrews 4:12)

Are you and your kids interested in Bible Journaling but aren’t sure where to begin? Follow these five easy tips to start your creative Bible Journaling journey together!

  1. Start by choosing a wide-margin Journaling Bible in a trustworthy translation that provides ample room for you and your children to write in, draw in, and decorate in as you please! There are several types of Journaling Bibles to choose from. Consider your children’s age and aptitudes when choosing a Bible for them:

    • The NIV Wonders Of Creation Holy Bible is perfect choice for children who aren’t quite ready to journal but who love to color and want to be a part of the fun. This Bible is filled with illustrations and Bible verses that highlight the beauty and glory of God’s glorious creation. We’re currently giving away a copy of one of these Bibles to one of our US readers – be sure to enter our giveaway now through November 30, 2016 for your chance to win!

    • The NIV Beautiful Word Coloring Bible and the NIV Beautiful Word Bible are perfect for tweens, teens and moms who are ready to begin their Bible journaling adventure but prefer to start with a little guided inspiration! Both of these Bibles are contain generous amounts of journaling space as well as illustrated verses to inspire you (they are either blank for your coloring pleasure or pre-colored for inspiration, depending on which Bible you choose!)

    • The NIV Holy Bible For Girls, Journal Edition is a stunning choice for tweens, teens and moms who want a blank Journaling Bible filled with generous margins and faint journaling lines that will make note-taking and illustrating a breeze! (All photos in this article feature this Bible). One of the things that I love about this Bible is that it comes in four different cover choices so that everyone in your family can choose their favorite! This has become one of my favorite journaling Bibles and I’d love to share one with you –be sure to enter our giveaway at the end of this article for a chance to win one of these beautiful Journaling Bibles for yourself or someone you love!
  2. Gather your favorite crafting supplies (you probably already own many of the supplies that you need) and then pick up additional items as desired! Essential supplies include your wide-margin Journaling Bible and a good set of archival pens and colored pencils that will not excessively bleed through your pages (test them in a non-conspicuous spot in your Bible to find out which ones work best for you!) Other fun supplies include alphabet and decorative stickers, washi tape, stamps and ink pads, and acrylic paint. Illustrated Faith makes a wonderful line of products that are specially designed for Bible Journaling – I’ve included some samples of their supplies in the photos!

  3. Pick a passage to study with your children in the Bible. Discuss what the passage means and what God is saying to you. Then – as simply or as creatively as you like – encourage your kids to journal (in words and/or pictures) what they want to remember from the passage. When they are done, make sure they date the page so they can track God’s messages to them over time!

  4. To make your initial Bible journaling sessions easier, look for passages with words that evoke concrete images, such as hearts, doves and boats, which can be easily drawn or embellished with stickers and die cuts. If you are studying passages containing abstract concepts, incorporate colors, decorative washi tapes and creative doodles to convey the message.

  5. For fun, create and experiment with different artistic techniques as you feel led – but always keep your primary focus on God and His Word. Memorizing the Scriptures you are journaling is a wonderful way to stay focused and to add another level of spiritual blessing to your time together in the Word!

Each page you and your children create is a reminder of the time you spend with God and a testament to how God is moving through your lives. Over time, you and your children will discover that your Journaling Bibles are priceless keepsakes that chronicle God’s personal love, care and faithfulness to you.

Bible Journaling not only builds familial bonds between mothers and children, but it also lays a strong spiritual foundation that will bless us for the rest of their lives!

I do Bible journal with my kids, but we don’t have actual journaling Bibles to work in. Until we get them, we’ve been using sketchbooks and other supplies. We’d love to have good Bibles to use for that.

I have looked at Bible journaling before but have never tried it. Not sure where to start. I am one of those people who hate to write in my Bible. What if later on, I wouldn’t want that image or passage highlighted? I am beginning to ease up on that and thinking about getting into journaling. Thanks for the tips!

I am looking for a journaling Bible to buy for my daughter right now. Actually all 3 daughters. It would be amazing to win one!
I recently found a couple facebook groups about Bible journaling and fell in love. My oldest is 11 and she wanted to know if she could join me. And of course little sisters 9 and 7 wanted to join.
We were hoping to all get Bible for Christmas so we could start out the new year with a new adventure with them.
I love being able to share this with them. It’s going to be something we do instead of watching so much tv. 🙂
