Call Of The Cats – Book Review

Welcome to Wordless Wednesday at Create With Joy! This week, we are featuring another fabulous animal-themed book as part of the 2017 What An Animal Reading Challenge. We’re also thrilled to launch our first giveaway of 2017!

Did you ever dream that your life would turn out a certain way – only to discover that the life you envisioned would turn out so completely different than anything you ever imagined in your wildest dreams?

You could say that’s what Call Of The Cats: What I Learned About Life And Love From A Feral Colony by Andrew Bloomfield is all about.

Call Of The Cats

Imagine this scenario:

You spend your life heading down a certain spiritual path – researching Himalyan power spots across Nepal – only to find yourself in the one place on Earth you mever thought you would be: in Hollywood, trying to break into show business!

When things don’t pan out the way you planned and you find yourself living as another homeless statistic, you find your say to a friend’s home. You think you’ve discovered Mayberry, only to learn that you’re living in the Wild Kingdom!

As it turns out, the “Wild Kingdom” is the colony of feral cats that lives right behind your new home. The incessant yowls and howls from the colony invade your home, your yard, your quiet, and your peace of mind during all hours of the day and night.

This is how Andrew – the guy who says “I’m not even a cat person” – finds himself immersed in the world of feral cats – cats who are not abandoned but formerly domesticated cats, but cats who were born in the wild and are utamed (and often, untamable).

Feral Cats Quote

Andrew writes:

This story traces my time-consuming, ruinously expensive, and in the end, profoundly rewarding, twenty-year relationship with a colony of feral cats I came to know and love.

I found myself immersed in Call Of The Cats from the moment I picked up the book and chances are good that you will too!

My daughter lives in a remote area and many cats have been abandoned by previous owners, she was able to catch them and take them to have spay and neuter before releasing them, then she feeds them. 2 of them have become outdoor fur friends.

Thanks for sharing this post! We love our kitties!!
    Have a great week!

My niece has dedicated much of her life and free time to the care of homeless and feral cats. I’ve always been proud or her for doing that. Thanks for the great prize.

  10. Mother of 3 says:

The closest we’ve ever come to adopting a feral cat was to adopt a barn cat… 13 years later and he still prefers to hang out in the basement alone. Thanks for linking up with us at Together on Tuesdays.

  11. trisha too says:

    Just remember, you asked.

One day I came home to find the daughter’s boyfriend downstairs. He was noticeably nervous, but I tend to have that effect on him. The daughter is upstairs, presumably in her room.

For whatever reason, I go out to the garage. At this point, the girl is downstairs.

“Why are all the cat carriers in the garage?”
“Umm, well, because we’re going back to catch the rest of the litter of kittens that are in my room.”

I quickly put the stop on that plan, but she still has the original three formerly feral cats.

    Good grief.

  12. meowmeowmans says:

This looks like a fantastic book, Ramona. We have some feral colonies here in our area, and we love the amazing stories of love and life our friends who manage them have to tell. 🙂

  13. Carolsue says:

I would love to win this. We have a feral cat community where my husband works and they are all so special and each have their own personalities. I can’t pick them up or get very close to them, but they look for me every time I come.

  14. Maggie says:

The book sounds great! We have two cats, Mickey Mouser and Rufus the Red. As a kitten, Mickey was living in a wooded area with his mother and siblings. After he was trapped, we fostered him for PAWS because there wasn’t room at the shelter. When it was time for him to enter the shelter, we adopted him. Rufus was found living in a feral colony when he was about two years old. He’s in no way feral! We adopted him too.

  15. Audrey Stewart says:

I love cats! I have a small rescue shelter for elderly cats. I have 12 at the moment, having lost 3 this year.

  16. I would love to get this book and do a purrview – I know several folks who look after feral colonies… I had several ferals that I cared for and have grieved over when they went OTRB or just disappeared.

    Purrz, Katie Kat.

  17. I’m not a cat person and you mentioned that the author wasn’t either. But the story sounds quite interesting. Feral cats are interesting actually. I grew up on a ranch and feral cats were always around. They took care of the mice problem with is awesome! I remember that as a kid I always found them fascinating.

  18. Bee says:

That book sounds really interesting! I love cats and we “inherited” two from the previous owner of our new house.

  19. Thanks for hosting this fun and fabulous party. Wishing you a wonderful new year!

  20. indah nuria says:

What a life-changing moment! When I read your introduction, I know this book is awesome :). We’ve been wanting to have cats for a long time but the owner of the house we rent says a big no for any pets..

  21. Sounds like a liberating read. There are so many unexpected things that happen, as if guiding us beknowingly.

  22. Robin says:

This book sounds great! Ferals are a very special type of kitty. My dad has a real heart for ferals. I think this book would be a great way to get to know the ferals!

  23. I have rescued a feral cat after a hurricane came through Miami.
She was one of the best pets I’ve ever had!

This is my first time visiting your blog and I hope to visit again often.
Please visit mine as well as I am newly back on the blogging scene and would
    love some comments and followers!

  24. Kyle says:

I took in an abandoned cat about 10 years ago, and now he’s on his last leg… well, last three legs. He’s been an absolutely great addition to my family, and is an overall great cat. I am really glad that I was able to provide him with the caring family and safe home that he was denied when he was left behind by a family that moved, presumably to a place that was not animal friendly. But when I took him in I was living in a house that was supposed to be animal free, and I had to hide him when the landlord would come by. Sometimes there are just things you have to do to protect a member of your family.

  25. I love the idea of this book…there is literally so much we can do to help in our own backyards…

  26. This book sounds right up my ally… and my aunt’s too! I would love to be able to share it with her.

  27. Sarah says:

That sounds like a great read.

  28. Jen says:

I have been longing to adopt a cat recently and this looks like a great book!

  29. I can’t wait to read this book! Thanks.
