Magellan – True Believer

Do your pets experience separation anxiety when you’re away from home?

My Maine Coons are blessed with round-the-clock human companionship most days. Because they are accustomed to having someone care for them at all times, they tend to experience separation anxiety when one or more of their people are away from home (even for short periods during the normal course of the day). In particular, Magellan does not like it when his parents “abandon” him – even to run essential errands such as grocery shopping! I guess he figures that since his food is delivered to our home each month, there’s no excuse for us to have to go out and hunt food for ourselves!

One thing that seems to bring them great comfort during our absence is surrounding themselves with things they associate with us. Tsunami loves to bury himself in his father’s clothes and shoes (the more aromatic they are, the better!) And Magellan derives great comfort from the Bible.

The Bible says, in James 4:8, to “draw near to God and He will draw near to you”. Over the years, I’ve had several cats who have seemed extra sensitive to the spiritual world around them – including Magellan. At night, Magellan often closes the day with me in prayer. He watches over me as I read and study. He purrs when I read Scripture to him!

In a world that’s filled with so much uncertainty, isn’t it comforting to know that God’s Word can bless and bring rest to all of His creation?

  6. Wow it has been awhile since I have been here. I have missed it. That is such a sweet story about your pets. I love that your cat purrs while you read the Bible to them. That is amazing. I do think they know of God and the spirit side of things. Thank you for providing the link up today 🙂 Blessings to you!

Gracie apparently has some separation anxiety. She was hiding (which she never does) when we got home from a quick out-of-town trip. The cat sitter came over twice a day, but we were surprised that Gracie was under the bed. Zoe, of course, greeted us happily as soon as we walked in. All good now: Gracie is here on the bed, purring away. And here comes Zoe. 🙂

Happy and blessed Wednesday, Ramona! And to Tsunami and Magellan, too!

  8. That is so awesome that Magellan curls up with the good book. ♥

  10. Kitties!! I love cats. While my cats are clingy, they are also used to me going to work and being out of the home for almost 12 hours most days. Beautiful cat you’ve got there. 🙂

  11. Pawkisses for a Happy Wordless Wednesday 🙂 <3

  12. Unfortunately, many people spend less time in God’s Word than Magellan. Have a blessed Wordless Wednesday.

  13. Magellan is the most interesting cat in the world. Great photo.

  14. Shanna says:

    Oh, Magellan is so darling.
I run my business out of my home, so my babes also have someone with them nearly all of the time. I think they must have some degree of separation anxiety when we’re gone.

  15. Kilo experiences some separation anxiety when I’m gone for long periods of time. I use my Furbo to keep in touch and give him treats during the day. He loves it!

  16. Betty Sue says:

My little Schnauzer has extreme separation anxiety when, on occasion, I have to leave him because I can’t take him somewhere with me. He whimpers and cries for a long while, then he seeks revenge before I get back. Gotta love ’em, though!

  17. Peabea says:

Awe…a purring cat ~ I miss that, and so lovely you say your cat purrs as you read scripture. Love it. We not only have Razzy, my dog furbaby. And yes, even though my hubby is home most all the time, he says Razzy sits and looks out waiting for my return.

  25. Magellan is one awesome cat and a cat of great faith.

  26. Kristi says:

That is pretty cool that your cats take comfort in those things – especially the bible! when you are away.

  27. I am so very behind in my blogging!

This was a beautiful post. I love that your kitties are so much part of your spiritual world.
My doggie also suffers from separation anxiety. If everyone is not at home, she keeps an anxious eye towards the door we use to enter the house and will not fully sleep until everyone is at home. Especially if one of the children are not here.
I remind her, many times, that the lord is watching over all of us and will deliver them home, safe and sound.

    Thanks for sharing this.

    – Lisa
