A Spoonful Of Grace

A Spoonful Of Grace – Book Review

What are mealtimes like in your home? Does your family pray before they eat? Do you share meaningful discussions about your faith with one another?

I grew up in a home where saying grace – a prayer of gratitude – before each meal was a way of life – but as I look around, it seems to be a tradition that fewer and few families are passing down. That’s why I am delighted to come across A Spoonful Of Grace: Mealtime Blessings In Bite-Sized Pieces by Annette Hubbell, a book that not only re-introduces the tradition of saying grace at mealtime to a new generation of families, but re-vitalizes the practice with Scripture and family devotions as well!

A Spoonful Of Grace is a family devotional containing 366 short but heartfelt prayers of thanksgiving for us to say at mealtime – along with the Scripture that inspired the prayer and ”Grace Notes” – ideas or quotations that illustrate the theme of the verse and facilitate faith-filled conversations. The graces are divided into Everyday Graces, Sunday Graces and Special Graces (holidays , birthdays) to help you easily find a grace for any occasion.

One thing I like about A Spoonful Of Grace is that the Scriptures – and therefore the prayers – are derived from every book of the Bible. Another thing I like is that the author uses a variety of popular Bible translations in her prayers.

The thing I like most about A Spoonful Of Grace, however, is that the prayers are rich and reverent, inviting us into a deeper relationship with and appreciation for God. Opening the book at random, here is the 93rd prayer in the book (inspired by John 14:2-4, MSG):

God Almighty, thank you for this food and our family. Thank you for being right here with us as we pray. We are in awe of your greatness and tenderness for us. We are amazed that you can be with us and yet be everywhere else too, all at the same time. And Lord, we really don’t understand how there can be a house big enough – or a heaven big enough – for all of us. Help us see that your ways are bigger than our ways and that though our human minds cannot yet understand, one day everything will be clear to us. May we always reach for you first, because you are the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end of all things. Amen.

Can you see how prayers like these foster dialog and conversation while expressing reverent worship and gratitude to the Creator of the Universe?

Annette invites us to approach each grace with an attitude of wonder and expectancy as we and our families connect with one another through the shared experience of Scripture reading, devotional reading, and prayer. She writes:

The combining of eating with prayer was such an important part of the Jewish culture in Jesus’ time. Many of his parables were told in the context of eating and drinking, and prayer was an integral part of the daily meal…

Give Jesus a little time at your meal and see what happens. You might just be amazed.

I encourage you to become a family that prays together – starting with meals – by picking up A Spoonful Of Grace (and be sure to enter our Giveaway for a chance to win a copy for yourself or a friend!)

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
