Learn Biblical Hebrew Online – Israel Institute Of Biblical Studies Review
When you sit down to read your Bible, have you ever encountered a word or passage that you wanted to explore more in-depth than you currently had the capacity to do? Have you ever heard people interpret the same passage in different ways and wondered which interpretation was correct? Have you ever felt a longing to read God’s Word in the original languages in which it was written but felt that, perhaps, it was a pipe dream?
Well the Israel Institute Of Biblical Studies – a program that’s accredited by Hebrew University – is committed to bringing your dream to life!
The Israel Institute Of Biblical Studies is an online language academy that specializes in Hebraic languages such as Biblical Hebrew, Modern Hebrew, Aramaic and Yiddish. They use technology to bring students from all over the world together in a global classroom to study the original languages of the Bible through live video sessions, webinars, and live practice sessions.
As you interact with your native speaking Hebrew teacher and your peers, you will sharpen your speaking and writing skills. Between classes, you’ll have the opportunity to explore a vast library of academic resources that will help you to gain the most out of your experience – review recordings of your previous classes to catch up on anything you might have missed – and supplement these resources with online blog articles, educational videos, and a workbook to practice in!
Did I mention that you do all of this from the convenience of your own home?
I have always wanted to learn the original languages of the Bible, so when I received an invitation to enroll in the Israel Institute Of Biblical Studies Biblical Hebrew Class For Beginners, I could not let the opportunity to do so pass me by!
This class is offered throughout the week so it’s easy to find an hour that conveniently fits in to your schedule! To date, I have attended 4 of the 30 classes required to complete the course.
The first four lessons in this class cover the Hebrew Alphabet Then And Now and their relationship to the Latin alphabet, the 22 consonants of the Hebrew alphabet and the handling of Hebrew vowels. In class, we learn how to identify and distinguish Hebrew letters from one another – how to pronounce letters, sounds and words – how to read Biblical Hebrew in the original language and in transliteration – and add new vocabulary words each week. We also explore Scripture in Hebrew each week.
There are many aspects about the Israel Institute Of Biblical Studies that I really like. First, their technological interface is good and the classes run smoothly, providing video and chat capabilities to people all over the world as well as an interactive slate for us to write upon. Second, their website is resource rich (I have yet to explore all of their offerings!) Third, the class is recorded and available for review a few days later, which is helpful for note review.
Fourth, the textbook (which is available in both PDF and printed form) contains class slides, additional Hebrew grammatical notes, and spaces to practice what we’re learning. Fifth, the teacher is very friendly and is accessible outside of class should we have any questions. Finally, I love the convenience of studying in my own home!
As with anything worth doing, studying Biblical Hebrew requires time and dedication – but it’s certainly a worthy endeavor and an exhilarating experience as you learn to read God’s Word in the original language in which He gave it to us!
