NKJV Spirit-Filled Life Bible – Multiple Third Edition Bible Reviews
NOTE: This review was updated on October 1, 2018 to incorporate review commentary on the Hardcover and Brown Leathersoft editions.
It’s always exciting when your favorite Bibles receive a makeover – so I was thrilled to hear that Thomas Nelson is planning to release the Revised and Updated Third Edition to the NKJV Spirit-Filled Life Bible this month (September 2018)! As the owner of the NKJV and the NIV translations of the second edition of this Bible, I’ve always appreciated the resources and scholarship that Executive Editor Hack W. Hayford and his team bring to the editorial side of the Bible, so I could not wait to see new features would be included in the new edition of this Bible!
My original review for the Second Edition of the NKJV New Spirit-Filled Life Bible covered the hardcover edition of that book. In this review, I’ll be comparing the Third Edition of this Bible to that one, and sharing my thoughts on the differences between these editions of the new Bible:
- NKJV Spirit-Filled Life Bible, Third Edition – Hardcover Edition
- NKJV Spirit-Filled Life Bible, Third Edition – Burgundy Leathersoft Edition
- NKJV Spirit-Filled Life Bible, Third Edition – Brown Leathersoft Edition
- NKJV Spirit-Filled Life Bible, Third Edition – Black Genuine Leather Edition
The first thing that I’d like to note is that if you are on a budget or plan to use your Bible as a reference tool on a bookshelf in your library, the Hardcover Edition is probably best-suited for your needs. This work-horse of a Bible is designed with a beautiful navy cover underneath the paper jacket, embossed with gold lettering and a dove on the front cover to provide an elegant look on your shelf.
However, if you are planning on purchasing this Bible as your primary Bible and using it on a day-to-day basis, if you are able, splurge a little and treat yourself to either the of Leathersoft or Genuine Leather Editions – they are beautiful to look at and feel amazing in your hands!
Indexing – Black Leather Edition
You’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover – but for the price of a Bible, it’s hard not to, and in terms of beauty, the Burgundy Leathersoft Edition is stunning! The cover is printed in a duotone color with an emblem in the center and a smooth, leather feel. There are two ribbons in different colors on the inside to hold your place. If you’re shopping for a Bible for a woman, the colors are feminine and pretty in person. (Prior to ordering, I thought that this would be my favorite of the four editions).
Its counterpart – the Brown Leathersoft Edition – is perfect for that special guy in your life! Designed in a lovely attracted soft brown with the embossed dove in a slightly darker brown, edition also includes two coordinating ribbon markers to hold your place, plus the convenience of thumb indexing to help you quickly navigate through the Bible!
Burgundy Leathersoft Versus Black Leather Editions – 2 Versus 3 Ribbon Markers
But – much to my surprise – I preferred the more masculine-looking Black Genuine Leather Edition of the Bible when I held it in my hands! It had a “softer, more supple” feel to it than the two Leathersoft Editions (even though they feel and look fabulous too!) and it felt really comfortable to use! This Bible comes with three ribbons to use as bookmarks and a really nice index that also makes it easier to flip through the Bible!
Even though I think the Burgundy Leathersoft Edition has the most attractive cover design (personal preference), I think that I am going to adopt the Black Leather Edition for personal use (this edition just felt wonderful to hold and was “oozed” quality!)
Once inside, the contents were the same (except for the inside cover colors). I’m pleased to announce several upgrades from the second edition of my NKJV Spirit-Filled Life Bible:

- Clear and vibrant 10 point font (versus 9 point in Second Edition) and vibrant colorful graphics that make features stand out – three wonderful usability upgrades that make this Bible easier to read!
- Word Wealth: An in-text study of over 650 key Bible words (versus 550 in the Second Edition) by providing their meaning in the original language and correlating them with their Strong’s Concordance Numbers.
- Expanded Kingdom Dynamics by New Contributors: This in-text feature enables you to study important Bible themes throughout the Bible by highlighting bible passages related to that theme so that you can study them in a “chain” fashion.

I am not in the market for a bible right now but I will keep your recommendations in mind. I have quite a few bibles and like them all for different reasons. Right now I have an ESV on my desk. It’s a beautiful blue turquoise colour and is a soft leather or leather like cover. It’s small enough so that it is quite manageable in my hands and it has lined margins on either side for journaling. It’s my favorite because of it’s manageability.
