Humble Roots by Hannah Anderson – Book Review

Humble Roots: How Humility Grounds And Nourishes Your Soul – Book Review

Are you feeling stressed – anxious – overwhelmed – overburdened – in need of rest, a long vacation, perhaps even a sabbatical?

In her book Humble Roots: How Humility Grounds And Nourishes Your Soul, Hannah Anderson suggests another solution: turning away from ourselves and turning towards Jesus, who issues this invitation to us:

Come to me, all who labor, and are heavy laden,
and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
for I am gentle and lowly in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls.
Matthew 11:28

In other words, we come to the end of our ropes when we keep striving and doing everything in our own power, day in and day out, but we renew our strength when we humble ourselves and develop a healthy reliance and dependency on the Lord.

Humble Roots is a beautifully written theological reflection on how pride manifests itself in anxiety and restlessness in our daily lives, and how humility frees us from the cycle of stress, performance and competition. Hannah uses lots of illustrations from nature, gardening, and real life as well as the Bible and philosophy to illustrate her points; the floral illustrations add to the charm of the book.

Hannah gives us lots of points to reflect on in this book – for that reason, I found it a slow read as I found myself constantly stopping to ponder over her points rather than reading the book from start to finish. Hannah also asks lots of reflective questions and shares a lot of great quotes.

If you are in a season of spiritual growth, in need of life change, exhausted and in need of rest, and/or like books that challenge you to see yourself and life through a new perspective, then Humble Roots is a good book for you to check out!

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Can’t wait to read it (it’s about Discernment – a topic of great interest as it’s something we’ve been teaching on in recent months!)
