Refresh Your Faith: Uncommon Devotions From Every Book Of The Bible by Lori Hatcher – Book Review

Have you ever read the Bible in its entirety? If not, the prospect may sound a little intimidating. Where do I start? Will I understand what I’m reading? How will books written by the prophets and apostles of yesteryear speak to me today?

Or, perhaps, you read the Bible on a regular basis, but it seems you always find yourself re-reading the same familiar stories and passages, time and time again. On the one hand, that’s great – but you can’t help but feel that you’re ready for a change, and you’re not sure how to go deeper during your quiet times.

One woman who understands where you’re coming from is Lori Hatcher – a blogger, pastor’s wife and women’s ministry speaker who’s committed to making the Bible more inviting, relevant and understandable to readers. I’m currently reading her latest book, Refresh Your Faith: Uncommon Devotions From Every Book Of The Bible and I’m excited to share that I’m having a difficult time putting it down!

There are several things that make Refresh Your Faith unique. First, the book contains 66 devotionals – one for each book of the Bible – so you can read it at your own pace (you don’t have to worry about reading a devotional a day or completing the book within a prescribed timeframe!) Next, the book spotlights less familiar passages from each book of the Bible, so that anyone who picks it up can experience a new and refreshing time of worship and discovery with the Lord!

Finally, each devotional is 3-4 pages in length, giving the author the time to fully develop each idea, insight and lesson and provide the reader a more rewarding reading experience than you’ll receive from the shorter, pithier books on the market. Each devotional opens with a Bible verse to meditate upon, then follows with the devotional, an uncommon thought, the unusual fiath lesson, and a longer portion of Scripture from that particular book of the Bible to read for the day.

One of the things I truly love about this book is how Lori shares her heart through her personal experiences, opening the reader to reflections, experiences and growth they may not experience from a more traditional devotional. For instance, a few days ago, I found myself in the midst of an unexpected discussion with a criminal lawyer who was having difficulty understanding how a criminal could lead a terrible life and then, at the very end of his life, repent of his sins, confess Jesus as His Savior, and go to heaven as taught in the story of The Good Thief (Luke 23:39-43).

How a propos that the first devotional I read in Refresh Your Faith was “When Murderers Go Free” – her devotional from the book of Amos! In this devotional, Lori shares the powerful story of how she had to come to terms with the callous murder of her uncle and the complete lack of justice when his murderer was acquitted. She then correlates how, through the book of Amos, God led her to a deeper understanding of His justice, grace and mercy as well as our need for sin and forgiveness and set her free from emotions that only He could release. I can’t wait to share this devotional with the attorney who is seeking to deepen his understanding of biblical truth!

This is just one example of the powerful experiences that await you in Refresh Your Faith. Lori will help you to bridge the gap between you and your Bible as she helps you to get over “Misunderstandings And Hurt Feelings” (Nunbers), helps you to deal with “What Is God Doing?” (Job), and even challenges you with questions like “Is It Worth Fighting Over?” (Ephesians)

Refresh Your Faith is a gem of a book that is the perfect faith-builder for times like these. I encourage you to pick up a copy to read and to share with a friend!

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

I’ve read the Bible through in it’s entirety once. Uncommon thought to ponder; an unusual faith action step; and an unfamiliar passage suggestion for additional Bible reading.

  2. Natalie says:

I read through the entire Bible a few years ago. I like this devotional because it would help me answer some questions I have been having lately about Gods plan for my life and how he works in our lives.

  3. Julie Waldron says:

I have not read through the Bible. I like that you can read this devotional at your own pace.

  4. What a great idea to introduce readers to some of the less “accessible” books of the Bible in this way!

I have not read through the Bible yet. This resource looks amazing!
