SOW 9: Great Is Thy Faithfulness Part 2

Happy Thanksgiving, dear friends! Last week, during Songs Of Worship #8, I shared the story behind one of the greatest hymns of all times, Great Is Thy Faithfulness, which is Thomas Obadiah Chisholm’s tribute to God for all He had done in his life. This week, I’d like to explore the lyrics, and share CeCe Winan’s soulful version of the hymn.

Great Is Thy Faithfulness consists of three verses and a refrain that glorify God as follows:

Verse 1 demonstrates God’s faithfulness as revealed in His Word (see James 1:17). We can trust God to be faithful and to keep His promises because His character is steadfast and unchanging.

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not;
As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be.

Verse 2 demonstrates God’s faithfulness as revealed in creation (see Psalm 19:1-6). The universe and everything in it continues to run in an orderly fashion – without our help or intervention – because the hand of God faithfully oversees it.

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Verse 3 demonstrates God’s faithfulness as revealed in the lives of His people. Chisholm outlines a few of the many blessings that God bestows upon us in this verse, and then acknowledges that God’s blessings are too numerous to count!

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

The refrain that is sung after each verse glorifies God by echoing Lamentations 3:22-23:

Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided;
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

This week, as you comment, I invite you to bless one another by sharing some of the things you are thankful for and some of the many ways God has shown His faithfulness to you. Have a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving, dear friends!
