When The Morning Glory Blooms – Book Review
Have you ever had to face an unplanned pregnancy as an unmarried young woman – or support someone who has?
Imagine the fears, struggles, and challenges a young woman in that situation faces. Imagine the reactions and judgments the young woman must bear. Imagine the impact of the pregnancy not only on the young woman, but also on the families of those involved. Imagine the uncertainty that the young woman’s future now holds.
When The Morning Glory Blooms by Cynthia Ruchti is the beautifully woven, grace-laden story of not one – not two – but three young women (and those in their lives) who are faced with – or impacted by – their situation.
However, there’s more to the story than you might think. In fact, there’s a novel twist. Each of the women live in different eras – yet their lives are intricately intertwined!
First, there is Becky Trundle – a modern day woman living in 2013. Becky is doing her best to support her daughter Lauren, who gave birth to her grandson, Jackson, while still in high school. She loves them both, but, the sacrifices she has made for Lauren are starting to take their toil on her life and her relationships.
Then there’s Ivy Carrington, who learns she is pregnant in 1951. Her boyfriend, Drew, does not know the news – he has gone off to Korea to war. Alone and desperate, she befriends an elderly woman in the retirement home where she works. As a favor to the woman, she begins to write down the woman’s ramblings – which turn out to be more lucid than Ivy first believes. During the process, she ends up recording the old woman’s memoirs.
Ivy’s friend is Anna Grissom. Through her story, we travel back to 1890, the year Anna tried to establish a ministry for young women who were pregnant, outcast, and in need of a loving home. Anna tried to provide a haven for them. Even though many obstacles stood between her and her dream, she learned that prayer is powerful and God is miraculous.
Three women. One societal taboo. Three eras of varying familial and societal responses. Throughout it all, one good, gracious, loving and forgiving God.
When The Morning Glory Blooms is a poignant novel filled with hope, redemption and grace. You will remember this story long after you finish reading Cynthia’s book.

And what intrigues me most is that I was one of those girls 32 years ago, at 16 years old. However, unlike most young girls that are in this situation, I was trying to get pregnant. It was a rough start to our young lives as a family & I often wish that I had a mentor or someone to tell me to wait. However, I have never regretted for one moment the 4 beautiful children that are mine. The first at 17, the second at 18, the third at 19 & the fourth at 22.
