Discipleship – Living For Christ In The Daily Grind – Book Review

If you are looking for a book that will challenge you to think about what it really means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ – what it means to live out your faith in every aspect of your life – and will challenge you to not relegate your faith to Sunday mornings but to live out your faith during every waking moment of your life – may I recommend Discipleship – Living For Christ In The Daily Grind by J. Heinrich Arnold to you?

Discipleship was written Johann Heinrich Arnold – an extraordinary man who lived from 1913 to 1982. As a youth, he was forced to flee Germany after refusing to serve in Hitler’s armies. Later in life, he served as a pastor and elder in the Bruderhof community – a community called to reflect the love and light of Christ.

I was unfamiliar with this man and his writing before I began to read Discipleship – but what emerges throughout the book is the heart and soul of a man – gathered from letters and other sources – who has spent time with God, who has grappled with issues that many of us wrestle with, and whose life has been changed by Jesus and His teachings.

Discipleship is not a traditional book or devotional, but a collection of J. Heinrich’s thoughts on a variety of topics that are listed under three main categories:

  • The Disciple
  • The Church
  • The Kingdom Of God

If you like books that challenge you to not only think deeply about your faith, but to live out your faith in love, then Discipleship is for you!

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Ramona, I’ve read a couple of books with a similar theme and really like this type of message – Not a Fan by Kyle Idleman, for example. This book by J. Heinrich Arnold sounds like a classic that I would enjoy. Thanks for sharing.

    • Thanks Carole for stopping by – I am not familiar with Kyle Idleman but eager to check him out!
I’ve been really enjoying reading these classic writings this season – they contain a depth and perspective that is rare to find these days. I recently reviewed a few other books from the same publisher – Plough Publishing – that you might also enjoy as well!

  2. This looks really good. I haven’t heard of this author either but will look forward to reading some of his work soon. Thanks for being a part of Booknificent Thursday this week!
