Holiday Mashed Potatoes Recipe
If you are looking for a delicious mashed potatoes recipe to complement your holiday menu, then this is it!
In our household, we generally reserve mashed potatoes for holidays and special occasions (because the gravy we make to accompany it is so decadently sinful) – but growing up, mashed potatoes were a favorite accompaniment to Sunday dinners as well!
This recipe is a little bit mashed – a little bit smashed – but totally satisfying and extremely gratifying!
We are including Holiday Mashed Potatoes on our Easter Menu this year – but be sure to bookmark it for your Thanksgiving and Christmas Menus as well!
Ingredients
5 Large Russet Potatoes
1 Stick Butter
8 Ounces Cream Cheese
1 Teaspoon Salt
1 Tablespoon Pepper
Instructions
1. Wash the potatoes thoroughly and cut them into large pieces, leaving the skin on.
2. Place the potatoes in a pot of water and bring the water to a boil. Cook the potatoes until they are done and soft enough to be pierced with a fork.
3. Transfer the potatoes to the bowl of an electric mixer with a paddle attachment.
4. Beat the potatoes for a minute or two, then add the melted butter and cream cheese. Continue to beat the potatoes for another minute or two until all of the ingredients are incorporated. Your goal in this step is to evenly distribute the ingredients, not to remove the lumps.
5. Season the potatoes with salt and pepper and beat until the ingredients are evenly distributed.
Serves 8 to 10 people.

Thank you so much, Carla, for stopping by and for pinning!
You really don’t taste the cream cheese in the recipe, but it makes a huge difference in the consistency (extra creamy!)
Yum! I absolutely love any form of potato, but mashed are my favorite. I have not tried with cream cheese before and am excited to give it a go. Thanks for sharing!

I’m really looking forward to mashed potatoes this Easter – I’ve been serving different potatoes for Thanksgiving and Christmas for the past few years (and again, I reserve this mainly for holidays) so it will be a real treat!
But, this makes a PERFECT accompaniment to your Thanksgiving and Christmas meals too, so if you are looking for a good mashed potatoes recipe for those menus (or you just love mashed potatoes anytime of year) – be sure to pin or bookmark!
Mmm, mashed potatoes or potatoes in any form or shape. We love them a lot in our household and try not to include them in most dinners. Just like Carla said, I’ve never used creme cheese to complement the taste, will it be our next best thing? I’ll definitely give it a go. Thanks for sharing! x

I wonder sometimes where these holiday traditions came from? Nevertheless, mashed potatoes are a favorite in our household. Thanks for sharing a cool recipe!

Wouldn’t that be a fun thing to research? We hosted Christmas this year for several friends and each made “must have” menu requests based on their holiday traditions!
Glad you enjoy mashed potatoes – done right they are SO delicious!
Mmmm. Now I’m hungry! What is your gravy recipe?

I have used cream cheese in Mashed Cauliflower but hadn’t though try it with potatoes! I am def going to be trying this soon. Thank you!
I love to add cream cheese to mashed potatoes. I make them for the Holidays too, but instead of just 5 potatoes, it takes a 10# bag to feed our crew. Sometimes, I add a bit of real cream too. I think I am hungry now! LOL

There are two things I like doing in this world… one is programming and the second is cooking… and I’m Irish… and I LOVE mashed potatoes haha
No joke, I will be trying to make this tonight (tonight is Chili night and this sounds like a good pairing).
I’ll let you know how it goes!
(The cream cheese btw… never thought about that, that’s exciting!)

I’ve never put cream cheese in mashed potatoes before, sounds yummy! I’ll have to try this recipe out the next time I make smashies. Thanks for sharing!
OH MY! Potatoes, butter, and cream cheese! You cannot go wrong with that combo. I cannot wait to try this. We, too, reserve mashed potatoes for special occasions, but I might not be able to wait. 🙂
The love of my life is an Irishman who has an unnatural obsession with potatoes. Trying a recipe like this is sure to earn me ‘brownie’ points! Thanks for sharing.

The trouble I could get into if my budget allowed it!
Yum, yum, cream cheese added to the mashed potatoes?? I just have to try this! In our house we do mashed potatoes regularly, maybe once or twice a week, because I’m a potato freak. I’ll definitely have to try this recipe next time!
Thanks for the recipe…those look AMAZING! I would certainly have to limit myself to major holidays with that, as I think I would dive in the bowl head first and not come up for air until they were gone. Can you tell I’ve been on a weight loss program?!? LOL! No really, those look wonderful!

Carla, your blog rocks – I LOVE your header photo! Hubby and I were just discussing mud runs the other night!
Anyway, these potatoes ARE amazing – so good I only have them every few years (wait until I post the gravy recipe, lol!)
I’ve never used cream cheese in mashed potatoes. Something new to try!
These potatoes looks so delish! Double yum, for sure. Thanks for linking up and sharing with us at Funtastic Friday. Hope to see you again this week.
Because of my dairy allergy I’m not able to use cream cheese (I have an alternate for butter) but the recipe sounds delicious and the picture of it is making me hungry. I only peel my potatoes if I have to which means I’m probably making lefse, so it’s nice to see a recipe where the potatoes aren’t peeled.

I’m sorry you can’t try this with the cream cheese, Jennifer, but sine you have an alternative you can use, perhaps you can make this work for you! 🙂
Love mashed potatoes..my husband makes some great ones using the little yellow potatoes also with the skin on!
We’ve never used cream cheese, so that’s a definite to try.
Thanks!

I have yet to find a way to make mashed potatoes that I find irresistible, but I really love the idea of adding cream cheese to a mashed potatoes recipe so I Pinned this. Something seems to go wrong for me (like they are too dry or too liquidy or just don’t plain taste right). I’m also not a gravy person, but every once in a while, I do get a craving. For now, I enjoy eating other people’s mashed potatoes. You have me curious about that gravy now.

Hi Yona, so nice to see you!
The gravy is amazing!
It is my husband’s recipe – I never understood why people liked gravy until I tasted his recipe.
It is thick and the best I’ve ever tasted!
Wow! Cream cheese in the potatoes – I love that idea. Don’t think I have ever had that! My hubby uses celery root mixed in with his potatoes which makes them a little healthier.

Thanks for the celery root tip – will keep that in mind for my healthier moments! 🙂
My daughter-in-law loves mashed potatoes. I’m going to forward your post to her.

Anything with potatoes is a hit in my house, especially mashed taters. I make them in my stand mixer, which makes it super easy and FAST. My boys are always delighted when I serve up purple potatoes for a change of pace. The recipe is quite similar but uses sour cream instead of cream cheese. Yummers! 🙂

Purple potatoes – how creative! Will have to remember that for the future (love color on a plate!)

Yum! I love mashed potatoes. This recipe is very similar to one my mom has always used. Cream cheese gives the potatoes the perfect consistency!

You know you’re doing something right when you replicate Mom’s recipes. Thanks for stopping by Tori – hope to see you again soon!
I will have to try this. Never tried adding cream cheese as I always thought it would make it too rich but I will give this a try.

My family is a big fan of mashed potatoes with the skin on. I normally use red potatoes and blend them with lots of milk, butter and salt in my Kitchen Aid mixer. Using cream cheese instead sounds like a great alternative. Thanks for sharing this recipe.
Twitter: CreateWithJoy1
says:
Both ways are good – try it with the cream cheese and see which one you prefer! 🙂
Thanks for the recipe. These sound delicious. I have to try this soon! Maybe tomorrow night even. Yummy!

Thanks for the tip Elaine! Our mashed potatoes have never lasted long enough to freeze but I will definitely keep that in mind for the future (power cooking – yeah!)
UMMM Mash Potatoes! As a kid we had mashed potatoes several times a week. Now I serve them to my family a couple times a year, with butter, garlic and cheddar cheese!

We must have similar backgrounds Michelle – mashed potatoes were a staple in our household when I was growing up – now it’s a treat!
I love garlic and cheddar mashed potatoes – call me the next time you’re serving them!
Yum! I love mashed potatoes and I have not had some “real” ones in a while, if you know what I mean. Wish I read this sooner, it would have been great with some green food dye for tonight : )
Deb
Cream cheese in mashed potatoes? What? I need these in my life.
I have not used cream cheese in mashed potatoes before though it sounds delicious! I do agree that when mixing them in the electric stand mixer the goal is to distribute the ingredients evenly. I must have lumps in my mashed potatoes. 😀 Thank you for sharing this recipe! ~Adrienne
Yum! I love leaving the skin on my mashed potatoes too. Never thought of using cream cheese. Great idea. Thanks for sharing.
These sound creamy and wonderful! I love mashed potatoes and we usually save them for holidays too. Such a great comfort food!
My sister has always made the best mashed potatoes, and she’s always said cream cheese is what makes the difference. Sooo, I bet your recipe is fabulous like hers!
