Someone Died… Now What? – Book Review
When you lose someone you love, particularly when it’s someone who is close to you, your life changes in an instant. While everyone’s reactions, experiences, and journey through grief is different, feelings of shock, overwhelming emotion and feelings of uncertainty about the future are common feelings among survivors.
Each of us who faces loss needs to learn how to navigate our way through the valley of grief and loss. Each of us needs to find a way to move forward without our loved one and create a “new normal” for ourselves. Each of us needs support and guidance, as dealing with loss is not something we learn in school or can emotionally prepare for in advance.
That’s why I’m thankful that Corrie Sirota – a licensed psychotherapist in Canada – has written Someone Died…. Now What? A Personal and Professional Perspective On Coping With Grief And Loss.
Someone Died… Now What? is an easy-to-read guide that addresses both the needs of those who are dealing with loss and trying to move forward, and the concerns of those who are trying to comfort the grieving.
The book helps mourners to understand that grief is a process that cannot be rushed and that there are stages of grief that must be worked through (but that people can get stuck in if they are not careful).
The author also provides the grieving with tips and strategies for working through their grief – helps people understand what mourners really need – and addresses important topics like things that can trigger grief, myths surrounding grief, and secondary losses, and forgotten grievers like children.
One of the things that I really like about this book is that it is so easy to read. I can tell you from experience that when you are grieving, it is often impossible to focus on normal activities like reading, and the format and content of this book is extremely easy to follow.
In addition to easy-of-use, however, Someone Died… Now What? is filled with practical tips and good information that anyone who is going through the grief process can benefit from.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
