Welcome To Wordless Wednesday At Create With Joy!
Stay Cool With Tsunami
Now that summer is in full swing – once again, we are experiencing triple digit days in our neck of the woods – it’s particularly important to ensure that your feline family remains cool!
Tsunami – a Maine Coon who obviously wasn’t built for days in the hot summer sun – shares a few secrets on how he survives the dog days of summer:
- Tip 1: Conserve your energy! Only move at mealtime! Now is not the time to exercise me!
- Tip 2: Drink lots of water! I love running water – water fountains are my fave (did you know they make drinking fountains just for pets?) I’m not picky though – I’ll drink out of running faucets if I have the opportunity!
- Tip 3: Find a cool spot to hang out! I can often be found on the kitchen floor undert the ceiling fan during the summer months because I don’t like to venture far from my food and water bowl (see Tip 1) – but I also love the cool tile found in bathrooms and basements!
- Tip 4: Enjoy moist food whenever you can (liquids are good for you!)
- Tip 5: Hang out where the cool air flows – my Mom leaves the fans on just for my brother and I!
These are just a few ways Tsunami beats the summer heat!

Good tips, I experienced this with a short haired breed of dog and a young one at that last weekend. Even though she’s a young mastiff, she was really feeling it so I tried to be extra mellow, kept putting ice cubes in her water and changing it. When outside, made sure she found the shade and sat there with her. We were in the shade when she wanted to be outside, stayed longer on the deck in the morning and late day when it got cooler and the breeze picked up. This way she got to be outside without getting overheated.

Great tips Jeanna – particularly about adjusting the times of your dog’s walks to early in the morning and late at night when the temperature is cooler and keeping them in the shade and helping them to find the breeze!
I like the ice cube tip too although my cats simply stare at them and never drink the cool water when I give them cubes!
(They are really into running water although I keep water bowls available as well!)

Oh, how much I have missed hopping here and there. Coming by to see what is Tsunami up to. I hope we are able to get fully back to our regular routine.
Yes we all have to stay cool and yet it is important to remind everyone to keep on eye on pets, they also need to keep hydrated at all times.
Thanks for sharing, take care.

Yes, you can get them for both cats and dogs and cats especially enjoy them because many breeds enjoy moving water!
My cats are so big (ahem, Tsunami), we actually ended up replacing the cat one with a dog-sized one for him
(thought it was undignified for him to have to crawl on his belly to drink his water!)
Have a great week!
He’s so beautiful, Ramona! and those are great tips for us all!

We had a beautiful day today weatherwise… I hope we have a couple of more days like that too… not to hot and not to cold… loved it and guess what… my vegetable garden is finally all finished. Can you believe it.? SHEEESH!
That is one smart and cool cat. Humans need to follow this also.
These are great tips. Unfortunately here it seems like Summer is a bit shy. Today feels like an Autumn day 🙁

What great tips for beating the heat, heat stroke can affect small animals so quickly, it’s important to stay informed! thanks for sharing!
Those are great tips Tsunami, but you forgot the one that says take a dip in the water occasionally. That always cools off a hot cat.

Great tips for keeping them cool in the summer!
Great tips! Piper stays cool by drinking lots of water and staying in the Air Conditioning! lol
Love your crossed paws in this photo!
Great tips. You are a handsome kitty.
Tsunami, you a very smart kitty and we appreciate your tips. It is cool, grey and rainy here today, but most days it is hot, hot, hot. Even though our catio has two ceiling fans, we often shun it for the inside. Thanks for hopping! XOCK, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo
What a gorgeous kitty. My only additional tip involves cooling mats. They’re filled with water, and they really do stay a little chilled on hot days. My dogs will use them when it’s *really* hot, but the cats love them year round.

GREAT Tip Jean – we are unfamiliar with cooling mats – will be on the look out for these!
Those are great advices, Tsunami. I always chillax in a corner, when it is to warm. Sometimes Granny takes a washcloth to cool me down. Pawkisses for a cool day 🙂 <3

Great tips, Tsunami! Alice and Arya are pros at staying cool…and there is a bonus to this hot weather. Alice doesn’t even attempt to get outside. It’s too hot. 😉
