The Life We Never Expected

The Life We Never Expected by Andrew and Rachel Wilson – Book Review

When most parents learn that they are expecting a child, they begin to think about all of the positive things that their future holds. They begin to dream about baseball games and dance recitals and all of the other exciting experiences they imagine sharing with their little bundles of joy.

What they do not imagine is what their lives might look like if something were to go terrible wrong.

But sometimes, parents like Andrew and Rachel Wilson have to face that reality. In their book The Life We Never Expected: Hopeful Reflections on the Challenges of Parenting Children with Special Needs, they open with these words:

This is a book about surviving, and thriving, spiritually when something goes horribly wrong. In our case, that “something” was discovering that both of our children had regressive autism.”

In this book, you’ll learn how Andrew and Rachel came to terms with their new reality – but this is more than a handbook for parents of special needs children.

In The Life We Never Expected, the authors come alongside anyone who has ever been dealt a staggering blow in life down and asks, “What Do We Do With Suffering?” Through a meditation on Psalm 130, and an insightful look into the challenges they’ve faced and overcome in their lives, they teach us how to do more than survive the bad times – they teach us how to weep, worship, wait, witness, and breathe our way back to joy – back to a place where we can taste the goodness of the Lord.

I seem to identify with weeping lately. My mother has been diagnosed with dementia and her lucid moments are less and less. I mourn for what was but with God’s help, I will face what is. I know this book is wonderful. mauback55 at gmail dot com I am from Texas. Thank you for this giveaway opportunity.

I’m sorry to hear of your Mom’s diagnosis Melanie – that’s a tough one to deal with.
This would be a wonderful book to read for you.
Best of luck in the drawing! 🙂

  2. Anne says:

Waiting to feel better, stronger, healthier and back to normal after 4 years of a series of medical issues which are difficult to deal with.

  3. Denise E. says:

As a grandmother to special needs twin boys, I am Waiting. Either God will answer our prayers for healing here on earth, or He will make us wait to experience the ultimate healing when we meet our Savior in heaven. Either way, His will be done.

This sounds like my kind of book! I’d love to win!

  5. I would say that worshipping is what resonates with me. I am raising four adopted children with special needs. They are amazing and have come very far but my family doesn’t look like I dreamed that it would. There are very very hard days/weeks/months/years and there are also many blessings.
