Wordless Wednesday – Neighborhood Ducks

Neighborhood Walk 1

Welcome To Wordless Wednesday At Create With Joy!

Neighborhood Ducks

Have you ever been on a leisurly stroll in your local mall, only to find yourself run off of the floor by a group of shoppers who are walking side by side across the entire aiseway and refuse to give up an inch of space?

That’s how I feel as I walk around my neighborhood some days!

In this instance, I’m not talking about two-footers. Because I live in an area that attracts a lot of walkers, runners, joggers, and dog-owners, most of the humans I encounter are fairly well-mannered when it comes to sidewalk protocol. But the waterfowl – they are a different breed all together!

Neighborhood Ducks

Don’t get me wrong – I am always thrilled to encounter the waterfowl. I love watching the ducks swim in the water and interact with one another – I’ve learned so much about them simply by watching them during my random encounters! They are quite devoted to their families and quite community oriented birds. They definitely consider the community I live in their home.

But their sidewalk manners leave something to be desired.

I frequently encounter various types of community ducks when I walk. They are obviously used to humans clearing the path for them to let them cross. They often stop cars (and human hearts!) in their path as they cross the driveways and the streets. Just like our local squirrels, I sometimes wonder if they are a little too comfortable in their surroundings for their own good.

Tsunami and Jake

When Tsunami first joined our household, we introduced him to Jake the Duck just for fun. He was less than impressed by the encounter…

  1. Tsunami still looks cute even when he is not impressed =)

  2. Rhonda says:

Ducks on the walkways are always amusing. They’re like a little family. If we can only get them not to soil the area 🙂

Aww! cute photos I hope those ducks didn’t drive Tsunami quackers 🙂

Well Tsunami pretty much ignored Jake but now that Magellan is on the prowl,
he is looking rather battered and now is lying on his side instead of standing tall like the proud mallard he once was…

We live in a community that has ponds throughout, so we have and see ducks, Canadian Geese that when the season changes, they fly in formation as if they are going to go South, but never do. And then we have hummingbirds and the occasional lizards recently.

    Happy Wednesday!!

  5. I love your neighborhood ducks, so cute!

The word must have gotten out that this is a duck-friendly community because at first it was just the mallards I was seeing
(they are rather polite and quiet) – now I am seeing more and more varieties during my strolls! 🙂

I know what you mean about their sidewalk manners….nonexistent! Have a great week my friend!

  7. Ducks! I love watching them waddle everywhere, but they do leave a mess on the sidewalk… Thanks for hosting as always and have a great day!

Loved the photos! Yes, they are probably unaware of the dangers around them. Thanks for hosting!

  9. I can totally relate! We have a bunch of ducks and geese that live by us. The geese are worse than the ducks, though. Don’t get near them if they have babies. Thanks for hosting. Have a great day!

  10. Ducks do have a somewhat superior manner about them. nice eggs too!

Come stroll with me – Linky

In an old neighborhood, we had tons of ducks at a park near the house. I used to walk over there with my kids. Most were friendly. However, there were a few that were pretty aggressive. My son would go running to jump back in the stroller to get away from them. They did enjoy slowing traffic, too! 🙂

  13. EmCi says:

Love your story and the whimsical pictures

  14. Ruth says:

So cute! I have been in parking lots with signs cautioning about the ducks. I really slow down ’cause I do not want to hurt any creature.

People are usually fairly good in the driveways that run through our complex but I have seen the ducks wander into the streets and I am always so scared that someone is going to not see them and run them down…

Thankfully, God has always been watching over them so far as I have seen relatively few animals of any type be hit in our neighborhood!

  15. My oldest daughter had the same toy duck. She even had 2! Now the little sister is playing with them 🙂

  16. Magnus says:

    Wonderful duck shots!

  17. Molly says:

Clearly ducks have no idea about sidewalk protocol. At least they look cute whilst being in the way

  18. Really cool pictures of the ducks! Tsunami really doesn’t seem impressed at all by the plush duck 🙂

  19. Bee Halton says:

We live right in the middle of fields and have a bird feeder behind our house which is frequented not only by tits, sparrows, gold- and green finches but also a couple of woodpeckers.

This area has lots of sparrow hawks, harriers and bussards too and we had some squirmishes at the bird feeder :-).

There have been deer, pheasants, hedgehogs and bunnies up the paths behind the house. They ate all terribly polite though and keep out of our way 🙂

  20. Kitties Blue says:

hough we live in the city, it is only two blocks from our greenway and river. We have deer, ducks, turtles, bunnies, squirrels and groundhogs at the river. We get raccoon, possums, groundhogs, squirrels and skunks in our yard. We DO NOT like the skunks. Mom likes the groundhogs but they mowed down all her sunflowers rudbeckia and sweet potato plants. Our mom is a hugs fan of ducks. They have only traveled as far as a block from our house. XOCK, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo

When I saw the ducks I was worried there would be no cat picture. HA! Thanks for the link-up.

I knew I’d get grief if I didn’t post a cat photo – I always do, lol – so I went digging just to find one that fit today’s theme! Have a wonderful day Debbie! 🙂

  22. Love looking at ducks, they are so interesting. I could go down to a local park and look at them all day long. Very lovely photos.

  23. Daisy says:

I love when wildlife is in our neighborhood. We get some wild turkey families, deer, quail and other cuties. 🙂

I used to live in a area that had ducks running wild. They were sweet to watch. =)

  30. Just last summer here in NZ, cars on our road all stopped to let a family of duck and her ducklings cross the road!!

  31. Teresa says:

I have always loved ducks. We love to go to the park and feed the ducks. It sounds like you live in a very relaxing, nice place!

I love seeing the ducks around too, although I haven’t encountered them on a walking path. A few weeks back, there were some ducks hanging out in a puddle in our local K-Mart parking lot. They pretty much let us walk right up to them. It was so cool. 🙂

Playing catch up! Sorry for being so behind on my visits.

  33. Laurie says:

Love the neighborhood ducks! Quite the team!

Stopping by again to see the ducks, I had 3 this week roaming in my yard, its that time of year where they hunt for nesting possibilities away from the larger group.

I miss Tsunami, he was such a sweet addition to your posts!!

I miss sweet Tsunami too – thanks for remembering him – and I too am enjoying the ducks this year!
Have a fabulous week Karren – stay well! 🙂
