Control Girl by Shannon Popkin – Book Review

Have you ever come across a book that you know you must read because the title practically jumps off of the shelf and beckons to you?

I suspect that I’m not the only gal that Control Girl: Lessons On Surrendering Your Burden Of Control From Seven Women In The Bible by Shannon Popkin is speaking to!

Just the other day, a friend and I were discussing how our natural feminine tendencies to be “helpful” are often misconstrued by the men in our lives as a propensity to be controlling. We wondered how our natural desires to make life better for those around us so often end up having the opposite effect?

Shannon finds the answer in Scripture. She says that “Eve’s desire to rule over her husband” is actually a desire for control – and that it’s not a good thing! In actuality, it’s part of the brokenness of this world that arises out of Genesis 3.

She writes:

God never intended for us to carry around the burden of trying to control everything. He designed us to live in sweet surrender to him, trusting him with all that seems to threaten our future happiness. For those who love God, there awaits an ultimate Happy Ending. And if the end of the story is secure, we can flip back to any unsettling circumstance of the present and forfeit the burden of having to take control.

It’s often hard for us to see the areas where we need to surrender our overwhelming need for control in our own lives to God, even though it’s easy to point out those things in other people’s lives. That’s why studying the lives of seven control girls of the Bible – Eve, Sarah, Hagar, Rebekah, Leah, Rachel and Miriam – and applying lessons from their lives seems to be just what the Great Physician ordered.

Control Girl is a biblically-based book and Bible study that takes you on a profound and personal journey through your own control issues. Each chapter is filled with several lessons that include journaling questions and meditations to reflect upon.

No matter how control issues manifest in your life, Control Girl has something to teach you. This is a great book that I recommend for both individual and small group study!

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Oh man, my natural self loves to manage everything! Having teens is wrecking that part of me like crazy. Gone are the days when I micromanaged every single minute of their lives. (In a good way.) Letting go and letting my older kids make their own schedules, food, etc,. is difficult but necessary. 😉

Sounds like a book I need. Thanks for linking up at Literacy Musing Mondays!
