The 49th Mystic by Ted Dekker – Book Review

The 49th Mystic: Beyond The Circle (Book One)

It’s been a long time since I’ve had the luxury of getting lost in a great story, but this season, I’ve decided to add fiction reading back into my list of pleasures that I simply can’t live without. The first novel to catch my eye was The 49th Mystic: Beyond The Circle (Book 1 of 2) by Ted Dekker – an award-winning, New York Times best-selling novelist. I’m so glad it did!

I have been totally mesmerized by this story since the very first paragraph and – if this book is indicative of the quality of Ted’s other 40 novels – this might be the beginning of a long-standing love affair with this author!

The 49th Mystic tells the story of Rachelle – a 16-year old blind girl from a cloistered yet seemingly idyllic town called Eden. Here, she has been haunted for a decade by nightmares in which she is threatened by a terrifying guy she calls Shadow Man. Her father hopes that her sight will be restored and her nightmares will go away as a result of a cutting-edge medical procedure he has arranged for her to undergo.

Instead, Rachelle discovers that the lines between her reality, dreams and nightmares are blurred and nothing in Eden is as it appears to be when Shadow Man shows up in her waking world – restores her sight – and opens the doorway between two worlds. Soon she is travelling between Eden and a mysterious world who has been waiting for her to arrive as she is the prophesied 49th mystic.

Her quest? Find five mysterious and ancient seals before her enemies destroy her. If she succeeds, both worlds will be saved. If she fails, both worlds will be plunged into darkness.

The 49th Mystic is a top notch adventure with a spiritual overlay. The writing, story-telling and plot are simply exquisite. The key characters are quite memorable. This book is filled with many memorable passages worth highlighting and quoting!

If you are looking for a book that will totally transport you out of your mundane life and into a whole new world (one that you’ll be loath to return from, no matter how nail-biting the action gets), then The 49th Mystic is for you!

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

I’m surprised this is your first Ted Dekker! I read several of his early ones before we moved overseas. His writing is intense for sure! Thanks so much for sharing at Booknificent Thursday on Mommynificent.com!
