Overcome Mental Health Issues And Jumpstart Your Creativity

Blank Slate

Are you in the midst of a creative slump and having difficulty figuring out why?

If so, I encourage you to do a check-up from the neck-up and assess the current state of your mental health. Chances are, if you feel anxious, stress and/or depressed about anything, then these issues are impacting your creativity (and not in a good way, in spite of what some people may believe!)

Creativity plays such a significant role in our lives that when we aren’t able to express ourselves creatively, we may begin to experience stress. Left unchecked, stress easily spirals into anxiety and depression. Over time, this can lead us into a vicious cycle. It’s difficult to get our creative juices flowing when we’re feeling anxious, stressed, and depressed, yet we need to find a creative outlet in order to avoid falling deeper into a mental slump!

The good news is that as we learn more about the connection between good mental health and human creativity, the better equipped we are to handle the ups and downs of life and foster our creativity. So, here are a few things you need to know about the connection between creativity and mental health as well a few tips to help you to overcome your current mental health challenges.

How Does Our Mental Health Impact Our Creativity?

Our Minds

All humans are creative beings. One characteristic that distinguishes us from other animals on the planet is our ability to create. Sure, every animal can create offspring – that’s a biological function. But humans are gifted by God to create art, music, objects, architecture, and much more.

We have the ability to turn our ideas into physical reality!

When we are at our creative best, we can do incredible things. However, when our mental energy becomes blocked and we can’t express ourselves creatively, we can become depressed, anxious and stressed.

Most people who are depressed and anxious have a hard time expressing themselves and finding the motivation to express themselves creatively. For instance, writers and artists who experience anxiety often find it difficult to pick up their pens and create because they start to focus on what they fear and what could go wrong instead of relaxing and letting their creative juices flow. Likewise, people who suffer from self-esteem issues may avoid expressing themselves creatively because they don’t feel like they are good enough. They worry that their creations won’t be respected or appreciated.

As you can see, all of these negative emotions can lead us into a vicious emotional cycle – especially when we don’t recognize what is happening!

Three Tips For Managing Your Mental Health And Jumpstarting Your Creativity

Art Therapy

Even though we may be battling different mental health challenges, there are certain steps we can take to manage our mental health and jumpstart our creativity:

See an art therapist. One of the most interesting and effective ways to manage mental health and help to restore creativity is to see an art therapist. There are a wide range of benefits associated with this. Art therapists practice a unique and fantastic form of therapy that encourages their clients to get creative. Through various modalities, such as drawing, painting, making artistic structures, using tools or objects, and otherwise being creative, art therapists combine art with psychology, allowing their patients to actually learn about themselves while simultaneously learning how to express themselves creatively.

See a psychologist. Psychologists are highly trained individuals who study so that they can help people understand their mental health problems. Psychologists will help you to identify the root causes of your issues and help you to learn practical steps to move forward. Thanks to advances in technology, you can even work with a psychologist from the convenience of your home or office! You can find a professional near you that will help restore your creativity on sites like E-counseling.com and Psychologytoday.com.

Meditate. Meditation is another great way to practice self-reflection and to learn more about your own issues. As you learn to meditate on a regular basis, you will discover that you can learn a lot about your own issues.
