Make A Difference (Right Where You Are)

Bloom Where You're Planted

One of my favorite inspirational quotes of all time is “Bloom where you are planted.” From the moment I first heard this quote, it’s inspired me to look for ways to use my gifts to make a difference in the world, regardless of what’s going on in my life.

This week, I’d like to introduce you to three bloggers who exemplify this principle. As you read their stories, note how each of these bloggers are making a difference and blooming where they’re planted simply by sharing their lives, sharing their passions and sharing their truths (without letting shame get in the way!)

Thackery - Animal Shelter Volunteer Cat

First up is Kevin at Animal Shelter Volunteer Life – a selfless friend who spends countless hours helping the cats of PAWS – a privately-funded, no-kill, non-profit shelter – find forever homes. This month he’s advocating on behalf of Black Cat Awareness Month and letting us know that no cat should ever be denied the chance to be loved and adopted because of the color of their fur. Sleek and beautiful Thackery exemplifies the beauty and mystery a black cat can add to your home. If you ever have the chance to adopt a black cat, I highly encourage you to do so!

Disability Myths 93 Don't

Next is Lisa – a chronically ill Christian who’s been blogging at Chronically Content since 2013. Lisa writes about the challenges of living with a chronic illness, how it impacts every aspect of your life, and how to set goals, overcome challenges, and celebrate victories in the midst of adversity. Anyone living with a condition that doesn’t go away can certainly relate to that! What I love about Lisa and her blog is that even in the midst of her challenges, she continues to advocate for those who also need information and resources. If you or a loved one is dealing with chronic illness, be sure to check out her Invisible Disabilities Awareness Week post.

Hope

Finally, Malaysian blogger Veronica Lee at Of Mice And Ramen tackles a topic that’s still considered taboo in many cultures – suicide. She shares how the recent death of the 23-year old son of a mutual friend of hers and her sister has profoundly impacted their lives and the lives of those around them. As she so aptly writes, “Suicide never really steals the life of just one person… we just didn’t recognize the signs.”

Beneath The Surface

In a year when we’ve all been on lock-down due to Covid-19 and a season when the holidays are upon us, arming ourselves with information about the warning signs to look for might just save someone’s life. For more information on this topic, check out our article “Are You At Risk For Depression?”, which includes information about Kristi Hugstad’s book Beneath The Surface: A Teen’s Guide To Reaching Out When You Or Your Friend Is In Crisis.

Beneath The Surface Quote

It’s always fun to share the fabulous things that our community is creating but sometimes, we need to look at the things that are lurking beneath the surface of our lives. I hope that you’ll take a moment to visit each of our Featured Friends – to leave them a meaningful comment – and to congratulate them for being a Friend Of The Week at Friendship Friday at Create With Joy?
