Matthew Henry Daily Devotional Bible – Review
Are you interested in creating a daily habit of Bible and devotional reading? If so, then picking the right resources increases the likelihood that you will succeed in your new endeavor! Here are a few tips to help you put your new habit into practice:
- Choose the right Bible – look for a translation you can trust.
- Pick the right devotional – choose one that focuses on Scripture.
- Have everything in one place – convenience makes follow-through easier!
The new Matthew Henry Daily Devotional from Thomas Nelson receives check marks in all three categories!
For those of you who may not know him, Matthew Henry is an esteemed seventeenth-century minister who is renowned for his personal testimony and strong theological teachings that have withstood the test of time. His Bible Commentary was one of my first purchases as a new Christian many decades ago and remains a valued resource in my personal collection to this day. His work has been esteemed by the great preachers throughout time, including George Whitfield, John Wesley and Charles Spurgeon, who said:
“Every minister ought to read it (his commentary) entirely and carefully through once at least.”
The Matthew Henry Daily Devotional Bible uses the trusted New King James Translation (my preferred translation for Bible Study) and weaves 366 daily devotions from Matthew Henry into the pages of Scripture. The devotions are dated and are focused on specific passages of Scriptures but they are not placed in chronological order.
If you want to follow the devotions based on their scheduled dates, you can follow the Matthew Henry Devotions By Date pages located at the beginning of the Bible. When you read each day’s devotional, you’ll also find directions to the next day’s readings conveniently tucked in the text. There’s also a Scripture Index by Day in the back of the Bible if you want to follow the recommended Bible reading plan.
Although I found this set up a little inconvenient at first (a chronological set-up would be easier to follow), once you know where to find and how to use the aids I mentioned above, it’s easy to adapt.
The hardcover edition of this Bible, which I reviewed, is designed in an attractive red, white and blue color scheme with the silhouette of a “deeply rooted, flourishing tree” throughout. This Bible is typeset beautifully and easy to read. The letters of Christ are in red – there is a red and a blue ribbon marker to track your place – and there are full-color maps and note pages in the back. Aside from that, there are no study notes – the emphasis in this Bible is truly on reading the text and the daily devotion that goes with it.
The Matthew Henry Daily Devotional Bible makes a great gift for anyone who appreciates the timeless wisdom of the past and is interested in reading biblical commentary that glorifies God. The design makes it appropriate for male and female gift-giving. It’s also perfect for the daily Bible reader who wants to add a trusted devotional to his or her reading life as well!
I rate this Bible 4 out of 5 stars.
