NIV Student Bible Review

How often do you read the Bible? Do you read it consistently or do you find it challenging to consistently stay in the Word?

Phillip Yancey and Tim Stafford recently discovered that many Christians desire to read Scripture but struggle to develop the consistent habit of daily reading for three reasons:

  • They get discouraged.
  • They can’t understand it.
  • They can’t find what they’re looking for.

To help would-be students of the Bible get past these humps, they began working with Zondervan to create a special edition of the Bible that was aimed at turning them into regular readers of God’s Word.

This new Bible – the NIV Student Bible – is the perfect Bible for anyone who wants to read the Bible but needs a little structure and motivation. Recognizing that different readers have different needs, Yancey and Stafford created 3 different reading plans based on where readers are starting and what their goals are. This is one of my favorite features of this Bible!

Track One consists of several two-week sprints designed to whet your appetite. It’s perfect for beginners or anyone who wants to start reading the Bible but is in a busy season or feeling nervous about biting off more than they can chew!

Track Two provides readers with a bird’s-eye view of the Bible. This six-month reading plan provides a chronological reading of select passages that provide a highlight of Scripture!

Track Three contains the whole enchilada! If you really want to read the Bible in its entirety – if that is one of your long-time Bucket list goals – this plan will take you through every word of the Bible in a highly realistic, three-year reading plan!

In addition to these unique reading plans, the NIV Student Bible provides a number of useful (but not overwhelming or overly-intrusive) aids! You’ll find:

  • An overview of every book of the Bible at the beginning to help you set the stage for your reading journey
  • Highly helpful introductions to each individual book
  • Highlights and insights on significant passages
  • Profiles on 100 key people of the Bible that you should know
  • Glossary of People And Places
  • Where To Find It – an extraordinarily useful section of aids that lists Well Known Events, provides an Outline of Rulers, and more!

This Bible makes a great gift for students, graduates and New Christians, but deserves a place on every Bible reader’s shelf as well.

I rate this Bible 5 out of 5 stars.
